In the wake of the shooting of the man holding hostages at the headquarters of the Discovery networks, the following appeared in an io9.com thread on the situation.

(Astronaut #1: It never gets old, huh?)
(Astronaut #2: Nope.)
(Astronaut #1: Kinda makes you want to…)
(Astronaut #2: Take a hostage outside the Discovery Channel building?)
(Astronaut #1: Yep.)

He loves explosives
He loves his handgun, too
He hates the teevee
And what it says to do
He’ll take a hostage
And make them save the world
Boom-de-ah-da, boom-de-ah-da…
Boom-de-ah-da, boom-de-ah-da…

A riff, of course, on this:

Sick and wrong, but when you have a guy carrying a gun and wearing explosives demanding that Discovery stop making shows about war, all you have left is the snark.

Occasionally at work I find myself actively fantasizing about what I'm going to have for dinner. Distressingly, this can start the moment I roll out of the warehouse some days, meaning I spend 8-10 hours dreaming of food. Today, it was visions of an Italian sausage sandwich that was plaguing me. One 11-hour day later, I make it home and bring my fantasy to tasty, tasty life. Along with the utterly awesome Cheddar and a Corona, it was divine.

In other self-fulfillment news, I have finally ditched the old crappy keyboard in favor of a new, much cooler one. A Logitech MK300 wireless keyboard and mouse. Far more "click" than the old keyboard, I like the mouse, and it has a function key I already adore that opens the calculator.

Because the driver whose route I've been covering in addition to my own did not make it back from Mexico yet; I worked yet another 11 hour day. So I'm going to bed now. But I did put in my time off request for Renovation before leaving for the day. Yes, I make vacation requests a year in advance.

From My Old Kentucky Homesite

I think it would be a hoot if it turned out to be that godless Yankee commie homo-supporting baby-killing  bastard, me. So I’m asking all my readers to click on this link, scour down the page until you come to “local media personality … etc.” and enter my name: Larry Wallberg. No explanation. Just Larry Wallberg.

Obviously, I don’t expect to win, or even come close. But if I could garner even, let’s say, fifty votes, that ought to give the yokels at the paper pause — because, aside from the idiot at the Life + Stupidity section to whom I complained about a month ago, they won’t have a clue who I am.

If, by some fluke, I do happen to win, I promise that I’ll say or write something outrageous in response. I doubt that I’ll be able to find a New Yawk atheist version of Sacheen Littlefeather to collect my prize, but whatever I do, it will be appropriately hilarious and heathenly.

Thanks. (Just for the record, I also hate what Kentucky did to its Native Americans.)

Feel free to boost the signal.

  • It occurs to me that on the nights I just stuff myself with chips and salsa I'm actually eating a vegetarian meal.

  • Exclude the usual extra-sharp cheddar cheese and it might even be called vegan.

  • Never thought you see those words associated with the dedicated carnivore, eh?

  • Speaking of food, I am dealing with a mystery, an enigma of packaging, if you will.

  • My Fake Mexican food comes in bags of 18 individually-wrapped items, burritos or chimichangas.

  • I always eat one of each.

  • Yet inevitably I end up with an extra burrito.

  • Do burritos breed? Is a chimi escaping from each bag?

  • We've really fallen behind on the de-cluttering. This weekend the kitchen/dining area is getting done, and were going to start planning for a garage sale.

  • This means attacking the Room of Junky Doom to determine what stays and what goes up for sale.

  • Probably another Great Sale of RPG stuff.

  • Now that's just sad. A towering foul ball at the Giants-Marlins game, and it went into a section with no one in it. Barely 5,000 people at the game.

  • JaMarcus Russell is no longer an Oakland Raider. He now joins the long list of Epic First Pick Flame-Outs.

  • Somewhere in a Texas jail cell, Ryan Leaf is smiling.

  • Been considering starting a blog at Wordpress or something to discuss game mastering, world building and similar topics.

  • I'd probably name it after some mythological gathering place for the gods.

  • Unlike some people I know, I'm not abandoning Facebook.

  • I am removing every damn ap from my account, and blocking all invitations.

  • For me Facebook is a good way of keeping up with friends and family who aren't on LJ.

  • Very tired. Staying up long enough for the Giants game to finish, dinner, then bed.

  • Seen today on the road: car with a fresh, green Christmas Tree on the roof driving down 680.

  • My theory? Family member returning from an overseas deployment, and the family is going make sure s/he gets a family Christmas.

If for nothing else, than for my news fixes.

But going a week or so without the net wasn't an absolute horror. Just some moments that I thought "I really should post about this when I get home" and then remembered that I couldn't. But Uverse has been installed, and holy crap is the net connection fast now! Our television picture is much sharper, and we now have a DVR along with a larger channel selection. All along with saving about fifty bucks a month.

So, I miss anything important?
gridlore: Doug looking off camera with a grin (Penguin - Typing)
I swear I was told that we'd be down for at least four days. But just for shits and giggles I started up Firefox and got a connection.

Not sure if Earthlink hasn't killed the account yet or AT&T was just a lot faster at switching us to their DSL service. We go to Uverse service later when they can schedule an installation.

My NCAA bracket resembles the Imperial Japanese Navy circa spring 1945.. what hasn't been sunk is out of gas and ammo. Of my Final Four picks, one is still in the tournament.

Been watching MSNBC all day. I love the process.
gridlore: Doug looking off camera with a grin (Penguin - Carpe)
[livejournal.com profile] kshandra and I have decided that we've been paying to much for cable and internet, and today signed up for AT&T service to handle these important parts of our lives. Saving a good amount and getting better services as well.

The downside is were going to be off the net for a few days until the switch is made. Not sure when the blackout period will start, but it will hopefully be later today.

Anything vital comes up, and Kiri can post it from her job. I'll be going cold turkey for the most part.

Since I use gmail for everything, the dberry49er(at)gmail.com address will not change. Anyone who uses [livejournal.com profile] kshandra's mindspring account to contact her needs to check her journal for her gmail.

4-6 days without the net. This could be interesting.

This is could be considered part of the de-cluttering process. Part of the whole plan is not just getting rid of stuff, but simplifying your entire existence. Reducing costs and turning two bills into one definitly counts. Along those lines, we dumped two more boxes of books (the rejects from the used book store) at Goodwill. Today's plan was the kitchen table, but has been changed to digging out around the TV and the path the cable takes out through the bedroom.

New toy!

I just learned that a Usenet troupe I had a hand in creating and growing 13 years ago is still around and even has a Wiki page.

Fear the Lumber Cartel!!! (Which doesn't exist, and is not currently in a massive power struggle over the future of Botswana with the British Dental Association. Fnord.)

I'd provide links, but then I'd have to kill you. You know how that is.

I installed Beyond the Sword this morning. Followed all the instructions, the computer seems happy, but when I start CivIV I'm not getting the BtS content.

The following question appeared in Yahoo! Answers' Religion & Spirituality section:

Calling all psychics?

can any one tell me how long they see my partner karen geting in jail thanks x

My reply:

90 days. But then in a stunning incident involving an issue of People magazine, a rubber duck, and an inmate who is secretly a Hapsburg heir, she will be implicated in a massive conspiracy to steal the formula for Coca-Cola! She will escape in a hail of bullets, and go on the run for several years, ending up in a close, if complicated, relationship with a yak herder in Nepal. Having learned the secrets of Yak-style Kung-Fu, she sets out to clear her name as a stealthy (if somewhat smelly) ninja!

On August 27th, 2019, she's going to decapitate you. Not for anything relating to the conspiracy or her exile, but for never returning her favorite CD and washing her whites with the red shirt that one time. Your last words will be "funny, it smells like a yak in here."

Trust me, I'm a psychic.

I'm so bad.

Or more fame, if you remember my Traveller writing.

About two weeks ago, I posted my HeroMachine takes on the cast of Servants of the Imperium. After a little dithering, I sent fan mail with a link to the set to Rob Leigh, the comic's creator. He sent back a nice email, and mentioned me in the site blog.

Those four pictures all have close to or better than 250 views. Krin is over 300!

Color me impressed!
gridlore: Doug looking off camera with a grin (Penguin - Typing)
The creator of Servants of the Imperium is off on his honeymoon, so we're not getting any new comics. If you haven't read it, the art is a little above stick figures, but it's fun. So i wondered what I could do with these vague drawings in HeroMachine?

Turns out, quite a bit. )

Brianna was the most difficult because she's just a gray body with red eyes and purple pony tail. I had to add some details to bring her out a little. Alas, HeroMachine doesn't seem to have an option for giving Kyle his proper egg-shaped head, but I think I got his expression right.

So, what d'yall think?

Edit: I've email a link to the set to the comic's creator, and I think I could do a Lord Severus costume fairly easily.
