Well, that's promising!
Jun. 17th, 2005 09:53 amThis morning I drove Kirsten to work, and then went to fill out the application I mentioned yesterday.
The place is Unique Towing, and after one wrong turn I found it easily enough. Nice place, clean and well lit without that "hi, we're a grungy business" vibe you sometimes get in this sort of industry. Very friendly receptionist handed me an application, which i filled out.
I gave the completed app and my resume to someone who I assumed to be a sort of under-manager. He looked it over, and told me he was going to check to see if the boss could talk to me. When I mentioned I wasn't really dressed from an interview, he pointed to his own clothes (white t-shirt, ragged jeans) and said "do we look like we wear ties around here?"
The boss wasn't available, but the person who took my paperwork sat down with me for about ten minutes. He seemed impressed with my experience with CAD (computer-aided dispatch) systems, as well as the volume of work I handled at SuperShuttle. I also scored points with my views on customer service. He told me that I should expect a call back for a more formal interview soon.
Let's hope. Because Kirsten and I are near the end of the financial rope. What we really need is about two grand to pay off the back rent and get next month's taken care of. The bitch of the matter is we make enough money, we just got caught up in a cycle of not having the money at the right time.
*sigh* If only selling kidneys were legal...
In happier thoughts, I received two early b-day presents.. the VW shirt I mentioned a few days ago from
murphymom and the second one is rather amusing.
Kiri and I both read Freecycle.org, it's a great place to get rid of junk, and pick up treasures. Yesterday, I saw this listing:
[sanjosefreecycle] OFFER;Giants starters jacket
Needless to say, I pounced, and sent a claim two minutes after the original posting. But I didn't get it. Bummed, I texted Kirsten, asking if she was the one who grabbed the jacket. She did, and I got a very cool lightweight windbreaker. This would be perfect for day games.

This is light weight San Francisco , Giants, Starters, Jacket. It says its XL but it fits like a Medium. I am a 9 nine in Jeans ad it fits me perfectly. It has a little tear in the inside bottom of jacket that can sew together at the seam. But doesn't show when you wear it. No Stains, and looks clean. Made out of parachute material. Doesn't smell like smoke. Embroidiered patch in front with Zipper, and Embroidered San Fracisco Giants on back.

Let;s hear it for ignorance!
Jun. 17th, 2005 10:41 amFrom an article on aggressive tactics my military recruiters.
Bollocks. The majority of people in Army combat units are white. Minorities tend to join for job skill training and college opportunities, whites more for the adventure and experience. I state this as a former infantryman. Every infantry unit I was in had more white guys than other races. But our support units looked like the bloody UN.
So yes, decry the overly aggressive recruiters who are crossing far too many lines in trying to fill the ranks, but don't play the damn race card when it isn't warranted.
Nancy Carroll didn't know schools were giving military recruiters her family's contact information until a recruiter called her 17-year-old granddaughter.
That didn't sit well with Carroll, who believes recruiters unfairly target minority students. So she joined activists across the country who are urging families to notify schools that they don't want their children's contact information given out.
"People of color who go into the military are put on the front line," said the 67-year-old Carroll, who is black.

I gave in, again.

The Democratic States of Graham and Marie Byrd
and
The Dominion of Barry Bonds
Guess which one I'm treating seriously. :)

Jun. 17th, 2005 03:44 pmNancy Luft is an alt.conspiracy legend. Her email campaigns, always very polite, and the fact that she really is a nice little old lady, might lull you into believing that she's just a person with some odd concerns. Then you start reading her.
She's a nutcase. Completely over the rainbow. She believe that the Russians have had satellites up since the 13th Century. That's just the starting point for her rants.
( Enjoy! )

Jun. 17th, 2005 04:20 pmI've been playing a lot of Nethack recently, mostly Wizards (one of the harder classes to ascend.)
So I've been dying a lot, and leaving numeorus "bones files", levels where a character has died. All his stuff is there, mostly cursed, along with his ghost, and all the monsters that were present at the time of death. A bones file can be a treasure trove or a quick death.
I also use a utility called Hearse, which is a repository for bones. Every time I run it, it searches for new bones in my Nethack directory and uploads them to the server. For every bones I send up, I get a random one back. Nice little tool, adds a lot to the game.
The uphot of this? I now have 21 bones files in my directory. That's an insane number. The game has roughly 65 levels total. The breakdown:
12 in the Dungeons of Doom, including the Oracle
7 in the Gnomish Mines, including Minetown
2 in Gehemmon. Asmodeus's Lair and the entrance to Vlad's Tower.
