Wow. I'm half expecting the local tamale lady to come by tomorrow calling out "Tamales! Crack! Fake immigration papers! Stolen handguns!" It would only be slightly less subtle.

Now that we have the shiny new computer up and running, I've encountered a rather serious problem. Vista simply will not allow Nethack to run in full screen mode.

bother.

But I was thinking that it might be time to expand my options a bit. I'm going to get Madden '08 (the current version does not allow for playing in coach mode) but am looking for other experiences.

Here's what I like:

  • strategic games

  • historical simulations

  • opportunities beyond combat

  • world building

Here's what I don't like:

  • first person shooters

  • games requiring fast reflexes or excellent keyboard/mouse skills

  • anything with overly graphic graphics (PTSD, y'know.)

  • games that railroad options

So, any suggestions?

This is what the New Box has, by the way. )

Well, today with the help of [livejournal.com profile] kor27 we finally set up my new computer. The big problem, of course is how to get all lour old data to the new box. He set up a sort of bridge that was working until he left to get some sleep, then immediately failed. Most of what's on the old disk is replacable, but most of the C drive is our entire music collection.

Yeah.

I think that we're going to let him sleep for about 16 hours, then send him a message. Help!

In the middle of this, we went out to Chili's for lunch. I have been craving this food for months, and decided to hell with decorum, I was going without dentures. Queso has never tasted so good, I devored my steak (in tiny pieces) and gummed my way through my fries. A very large beer helped. Great food, and I don't think I've eaten that much in one sitting in well over a year. Before, during and after the computer and queso epic, Kiri and I started tackling the living room. We've struck floor in several places!

Food coma is hitting. I think I'm going to defer writing in favor od downloading things to the new box.

What is AcroRd32.exe and why is it eating all my resources? Seriously, it's using more memory than iTunes.

  • Time to set up the new computer. It took Firefox close to ten minutes to start up.

  • Hopefully [livejournal.com profile] kor27 will be able to help us with the geeking.

  • I'm impressed. I haven't heard Rush's Spirit of Radio in years. Coming home, I caught it on The Bone. I not only remembered all the words, my timing was perfect.

  • Off course, I still lack in my ability to match Geddy Lee's high notes.

  • Allez, les Giants!

  • Not so good on the low notes either, now that i think about it.

  • I don't think a single driver was in uniform today. We all were wearing hooded sweatshirts under our work jackets. Freaking cold outside.

  • Snow on Mt. Hamilton, and some of the peaks and ridges to the east. But not on Umunhum, which is the danger sign for us snow-adverse.

  • Work has been crazy, I've been sleeping a lot.

  • Reading 1634: The Baltic War. Really enjoying it.

  • I find that I need to learn Vista. Dummies book has been acquired.

  • Also looking at Madden 2008 (2009 lacks coach mode.)

  • Yes, new computer for the Penguin.

  • Really blah about things right now.

  • Grey weather not helping.

  • I'm almost out of beer.

  • I really should turn on a light.

OK, a small portion of it.

As anyone who watches the Heavy Metal Sunday posts knows, I spend a good amount of time cruising YouTube. It's a great resource, filled with some amazing gems among the dross, but the bane of the literate user's experience are the comment threads. Maybe I missed the pop-up on the front page of YouTube's site that says "Abandon all Rules of English, ye who enter here."

The comment threads are where the bottom feeders of the net congregate. Horrible spelling, atrocious grammar, excessive or no punctuation.. it's all there, with liberal usage of profanity.

But now we have hope. Comment Snob It allows you to filter out the worst offenders the same way that spam comments and poorly rated comments are hidden. Better yet, it tells you why the comment is hidden!

I love Firefox, and in fact out-geek [livejournal.com profile] kshandra when it comes to tweaking and adding to it and Thunderbird.

Probably won't go tonight, but a matinée tomorrow at Santana Row would be nice.

BTW, how do you make the image a link?

Running a fever, stomach cramps, general yuckiness and a burning need not to be more than twenty feet from the restroom.

So yeah. Not in the truck today.

I'm trying to be at least a little productive. I've cleaned out my Documents folder of about 4 meg of old pdfs I was never going to use, and later I'm going through my iTunes folder and getting rid of duplicates.

But in the meantime, fluids, rest, and probably a nice hot shower later on.

So, what do y'all do when you're home sick?
gridlore: Doug looking off camera with a grin (Penguin - Exploding)
We either need a new computer with massive heat sinks and a fan that would feel at home on the Altamont Pass, or we need to move to a place that was built sometime after the end of WWII and incorporates such modern concepts as insulation.

It's bloody 2100 hours, and the main computer is still giving me the overheat alarm after ten minutes of use. Mr. Bigglesworth is a fine machine, no doubt, but the computer is our sole remaining CD player. I can't listen to, let alone review, the new Priest when the computer keeps crapping out!!!

There's a new version of HeroMachine out. Needless to say, I've been having fun with it.

1 - Go to Wikipedia's "random article" link. The first random article you get is the name of your band.
2 - Go to Random quotations. The last four words of the very last quote of the page is the title of your first album.
3 - Go to flickr's "explore the last seven days". Third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover. (I cropped mine to be proper album dimensions.)

I was amused to learn that all my paid account allowed me to do was read Usenet. After much searching of your FAQ, I found that I have to send you an email asking for posting privileges.

Would have been nice if that little tidbit had been in my welcome email.

Or in a follow-up.

Or clearly posted on your site.

But now that this little hurdle has been taken care of, I'm loving the service.
gridlore: Doug looking off camera with a grin (Penguin - Typing)
I'm still a Usenet junkie. I tend to dislike web-based boards (the threading tends to suck) and I like the wide-open nature of Usenet. It's like the internet was before it became the Web. We, for example, gleefully engage in swearing, character assassination, and flame wars.

Good times, people, good times.

But the problem has become finding a server. As Usenet fades, more of the big ISPs are dropping or neglecting their NNTP duties. Earthlink (our ISP had a server that went to shit months ago. So I switched to aioe.org, a free server. But their groups list was curiously spotty, and today the server vanished. Can't even find a status page. So I bit the bullet, did some research, and subscribed to easynews. It's only $10/month.

The problem is I'm a new user there. So Agent is trying to download everything in their servers. For alt.atheism, that means 897,085 posts.

Good thing I'm home early today.

Well, there are many reasons, but here's a big one. Taken from the group [livejournal.com profile] scans_daily, it shows an actual, published panel from Mighty Avengers #11.

Yes, that is how this Bendis character wrote dialog for Dr. Doom. Snoop Dogg meets a malfunctioning spell-checker. "Fat piece of furniture"? WTF, over?

Over in his amazingly cool blog, John Byrne, comics God, replies by doing the exact same scene in his own hand and style.

Which do you think better captures the masterful menace and power of Dr. Victor von Doom?

I'm bored, I admit it.

My new account.

Amusingly, I entered my high school information and immediately found an old friend. Haven't seen Cricket in almost 25 years.
