In horrible nasty winter weather, hot apple cider with rum is a reasonable beer substitute.

Hot cider with applejack is even better...

OTOH, I don't think they ever get weather suitable for cider and applejack in Doug's neck of the woods. It has to go below 50 degrees (F) first...
