Doing a little research, I find myself at the French Foreign Legion's website.

The maximum age for enlistment is 40.

I'm 40.

As completely wingnut batshyte fruitbar insane as it sounds, I did semi-seriously consider going FFL for a while there a few years ago, when I was having no luck with any employment. I retained a little French from three years of HS and felt I could do the job pretty well. In the end, though, I realized that if I didn't entirely like the military the first time around (USCG) then I sure as hell wouldn't have any fun at all the second time around.

Plus the FFL appears to be more or less the first French unit put into the meat grinder whenever France sends troops anywhere. I don't imagine the gendarme deal very well with the Legion Estranger too well, either.

As it is, I became somewhat gainfully employed before I seriously decided to join the Legion. Which all told is probably for the best. =)
