I finally cleaned out the Madden directory, and got the game reinstalled to my liking. Created a new team, the San Jose Wildcats. Did the fantasy draft, and entered the preseason.

Folks, either I'm a great GM/coach, or the Boyz really suck.

San Jose Wildcats: 105
Dallas Cowboys: 7

Total offensive yardage was 916 yards. Shawn Btyson, my back-up running back, rushed 21 times for 430 yards! He had several plays where he just broke into the secondary and was just gone. The man scored seven bloody touchdowns.

Along with that, I had a 84 yard punt return for a touchdown, and a 66 yard interception return for a TD.

Well, I'm impressed. I play in coach mode, so I just call the plays. More fun that way.

Looks like Dallas is on their way to another solo-win season. Ah, well. As long as they beat Washington, it's a good year, regardless of their final record.

That's like the West Point philosophy: if we go 0-10 and beat Navy, the season is a success.

Bet you don't know why the sugar bowls are removed from the dining room tables at USMA West Point at Army-Navy time, do you?

Nope.

I shall.

In 1945, Army was the best team in the country. Speculation was rife about an end to the bowl ban by Army, with a trip to Pasadena or New Orleans. When the Rose Bowl extended and early invitation that wasn't to Army, the corps of cadets looked to the Sugar Bowl, and sure enough, they got the invite

And West Point was silent. The deadline passed. Sugar Bowl officials shrugged and invited the second choice. The corps of cadets were angry, but how to express their displeasure?

On January 1, 1946, the day of the game, every sugar bowl on West Point vanished. Many a cadet learned to drink his coffee black that morning.

After that, the tradition continued, and migrated to the day before the Army-Navy game. What's even better are the traditional pranks the Cadets and Middies play on each other.
