Fashion question.

gridloreSince we know live in the bloody hot Santa Clara Valley, I bought a pair of shorts yesterday. I'm a little perturbed here, so those of you with a sense of style, help me out.
Being me, I wanted denim, and all of the men's shorts hung to just above the knee. To me, shorts come up to mid-thigh. Am I missing some sort of trend here? Is this the way things are supposed to look? Or am I a geek yet again?
What I forgot to get was running shorts so I can, well, walk. And tan. Pasty-white legs not good.
