Greetings from the wonderful world of construction material supply!

A bit of scene-setting. )

Yesterday, shortly after we opened the roll-up door, we noticed someone moving around in the dark of the Will-Call. We assumed it was an employee who had gone over to start the coffee maker. Until this guy yells "Hey, I need some service here!" Lights off, computers off, no one at the counter, front door locked, and he walked in through the roll-up door. Twenty minutes before we open.

Complete fail. Best part is he had to wait because in that magic half hour between 0530 and 0600 all our resources are devoted to getting the drivers taken care of so we can roll out.

Minor suck, but it was a definite WTF.

The second suck comes from a delivery. Since this is a three-day weekend for most folks in the industry, Friday was extremely light. Old rule in this game is to not order a lot before a holiday.. if you run out of material to work with, you go home early, right? So I was finished extremely early and got back to the warehouse only to be told that there was an emergency delivery to made to a location on the peninsula. This guy had called three times that morning to insist that he needed this material today, and as soon as possible. I load up, roll out, and find the street.

People, if you own a business, put your name somewhere visible. Or at least make sure that your street number is somewhere that can be seen from the road, m'kay?

Anyway, finally figure out where this hole in the wall steel shop was.. and there's no one there. Locked tight. Phone rolls over to voice mail. I wait while the office tries to figure out what is going on. The customer had left for the day, but said that another company could sign for the stuff.. and they should be back any second now. 45 minutes later, I'm off-loaded.

If you call us three times in one morning demanding a delivery, BE THERE TO ACCEPT IT!

My 49ers won the 2010 SuperBowl. I did this with a mostly young team leavened with some very good veterans, notably Antonio Gates at TE and Brian Urlacher and Leroy Hill in the Linebacker corps.

I picked up a rookie QB in a trade, and he turned out to be the next coming of Tom Brady.. so good that I was able to trade away Drew Brees (and his bloated contract) for some help on the O-line.

Just now I noticed that I had two Strong Safeties rated at 99.. to the trade block! I traded the older one along with my 7th Round pick in the draft next year to the Vikings for a younger SS rated at 81 and their 2nd round pick. The new guy has one year left on his contract, so if he doesn't improve he's not a burden after a year.

Assuming a good year, I may try to rebuild Candlestick. You can do that in Madden '08.
