June 6th, 1944.

"Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Forces: You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you. In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on other Fronts you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world.

"Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped and battle-hardened. He will fight savagely.

"But this is the year 1944! Much has happened since the Nazi triumphs of 1940-41. The United Nations have inflicted upon the Germans great defeats, in open battle, man-to-man. Our air offensive has seriously reduced their strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground. Our Home Fronts have given us an overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions of war, and placed at our disposal great reserves of trained fighting men. The tide has turned! The free men of the world are marching together to Victory!

"I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full victory!

"Good Luck! And let us all beseech the blessing of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking."

- General Dwight D. Eisenhower, Supreme Commander, Allied Forces in Europe

All the millions involved in D-Day, and it came down to, in most cases, a 20 year old Dogface or Tommie with a rifle and the guts and skill to use it. So please take a moment today to remember Sword, Gold, Juno, Utah, and bloody Omaha. Remember the successful failures that were the drops by the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions. Remember those who never reached the beach, those who died taking a few yards of barren sand, and those who lived to see the breakout.

Thank you, one and all.

When I decided to take a short ride this morning to get the paper (and, of course, doughnuts) there were spider webs on the bike. Actual webs. I had to evict two squatters. (Released onto the balcony near a nice location on the railing.)

So, I got on the bike, and yeah.. it has been some time, hasn't it?

Distance: .964 miles
Maximum Speed: 14.1mph
Average Speed: 10.2 mph
Time: 5 minutes, 45 seconds

Ouch.

San Francisco Giants: 16
Colorado Rockies: 4

Dustin Hermanson got his first win in seven starts, pitching seven strong innings, and, well.. everybody got a hit. Bonds hit number 674. We batted around in both the 5th and 8th innings, piling up 16 hits. The 5th was a comedy of errors. Here's how it went:

- Pedro Feliz singled to left. Runner on first with none out and Barry Bonds due up.
- Barry Bonds walked. Runners on first and second with none out and Dustan Mohr due up.
- Dustan Mohr sacrifice bunt to pitcher. Runners on second and third with one out and A.J. Pierzynski due up.
- A.J. Pierzynski intentionally walked. Bases loaded with one out and Damon Minor due up.
- Damon Minor one-out, walk scored Pedro Feliz. Cody Ransom due up.
- Cody Ransom one-out, walk scored Barry Bonds. Dustin Hermanson due up.
- Scott Dohmann enters the game for the Rockies with the bases loaded and one out.
- Dustin Hermanson singled to center scoring A.J. Pierzynski with one out. Bases loaded and Michael Tucker due up.
- Scott Dohmann wild pitch scored Damon Minor with one out. Runners on second and third and Michael Tucker due up.
- Michael Tucker sacrifice fly to center scored Cody Ransom with two out. Runner on second and Neifi Perez due up.
- Neifi Perez struck out swinging to end the inning.

Five runs on two hits. Crazy. The 8th was just as weird:

- Steve Reed starts the inning for the Rockies.
- Michael Tucker singled to right. Runner on first with none out and Neifi Perez due up.
- Neifi Perez walked. Runners on first and second with none out and Pedro Feliz due up.
- Pedro Feliz flied out to left. Runners on first and second with one out and Barry Bonds due up.
- Barry Bonds flied out to left. Runners on first and second with two out and Dustan Mohr due up.
- Dustan Mohr hit by pitch. Bases loaded with two out and A.J. Pierzynski due up.
- A.J. Pierzynski two-out, hit-by-pitch scored Michael Tucker. Damon Minor due up.
- Brian Fuentes enters the game for the Rockies with the bases loaded and two out. NOTE: Steve Reed was ejected for bumping home plate umpire Bruce Dreckman after claiming that Pierzynski made no attempt to get out of the way of the hit batsman.
- Damon Minor singled to right scoring Neifi Perez and Dustan Mohr with two out. Runners on first and second and Cody Ransom due up.
- Cody Ransom doubled to left scoring A.J. Pierzynski and Damon Minor with two out. Runner on second and Dustin Hermanson due up.
- Pinch-hitter Deivi Cruz doubled to left scored Cody Ransom with two out. Runner on second and Michael Tucker due up.
- Michael Tucker flied out to right to end the inning.

Highest Giants score of the season? I'll take that!

In a pixilated world, the San Jose Wildcats have won the Superbowl 80-35 over the Seattle Seahawks! That score was made ridiculous in part by cornerback R.W. McQuarters, who only did the following: 2 punt returns for TD, 2 interceptions for TD (one of 97 yards), and one kickoff return for, you guessed it, a TD.

I'm in good shape going into the post-season.. only one player has retired, and he was second string fullback. So I can draft rookies and look at free agents to improve my pass rush.

Nice touch in Madden 2003.. when you win the Superbowl, you see your players dancing on the field with the Lombardi Trophy.

So Ronald Reagan has an aircraft carrier and an airport named after him. Jimmy Carter has a nuclear submarine.

The U.S.S. Jimmy Carter was christened today by President and Mrs. Carter.
