Except for one thing.
Maybe I missed something. But from what I understand, the fleet had two Battlestars: the Galactica, an older ship that was being converted to a museum as the series started, and the Pegasus, a current model ship of the line. Were I in charge, Pegasus would have carried out the rescue mission. Send the better armed and equipped ship to do the job, leaving Galactica to shepherd the fleet. Admittedly, they both became involved, but I feel that losing Pegasus was a bigger blow that anyone realizes.

However in atmosphere jumps seem to be more common place in BSG land.
They seemed confident they were all going to the same place.
