Three days in, and I'm having a blast. Friday was consumed, once I got here, with settling in, and meeting up with people. Found [livejournal.com profile] aurictech by the simple method of camping in the hotel lobby and waiting for him. We discussed this year's party, and what we should do for next year's event.. it has to be special, since it is Traveller's 30th anniversary!

And doesn't that make some of us feel real old.

Got to bed at a reasonable hour after a quick pass through the party floor. Woke up way too early, of course.

Saturday

It is amazing how a good hot shower and the realization that you are at a convention can improve your mood. I wandered around checking things out, then went into the Dealer's Room. There was a t-shirt vendor that really made me wish I had hit the lottery. Made my traditional first purchase from Tom at The Other Change of Hobbit; a very interesting book on space elevators that is a mix of fasctual articles and pieces of fiction.

The first panel i attended was Where in Centaurs Do Centauri Come From? about the use (and misuse) of proper astronomical names in fiction. Some divergence into odd names, how names are approved, and rants about the "Name a Star" scams, but overall interesting an useful.

After that finished, I was on The New Doctor Who BBC Show which was heavily attended and really fun. My main point as a "classic" whovian was that despite the advances in special effects and CGI technology, they kept the essential low-budget feel of the show intact.

At that point, I needed to spend money. Went back to the Dealer's room and picked up Red Lightning by John Varley, and a new T-shirt

Big Bag of Dice: $15
Pad of graph paper: $2.75
Enough imagination to play RPGs, PRICELESS

There are some games that money can'y buy.

For everyone else...
there's X-Box

Food was also consumned.

I attended another panel, one about the scientific revolution in Europe during the late Middle Ages. Kind of unfocussed, but still interesting.

More wandering, a rehearsal for the Match Game, and at 1900 I did Are Star Empires Feasible. It was amusing to be able to sit on a p[anel for a couple of people with PhD's in astronomy and physics and say "Hi! I'm a high school dropout!" This was a great panel, and gave me many, many ideas for the Concordat.

After that came prep for the final Traveller in SF party at BayCon. The list is dead, no one from it really attends outside [livejournal.com profile] ataniell93, [livejournal.com profile] kshandra, [livejournal.com profile] aurictech (who comes in from Louisana) and myself. So next year we're rebranding. The Travellers' Aid Society will present the Traveller 30th Anniversary Party, and we have some big plans.

But first we needed to get through this con's party. [livejournal.com profile] aurictech did a heroic job getting things together, and despite being in the party annex on the 3rd floor, we had pretty good foot traffic. Things ran until about 0100, when we shut down due to mutal exhaustion.

Sunday

Actually slept in. Quick shower, protein drink, and I was readt to face the day!

Until I got to my first panel, Mission to Mars. Had these people been on television I would have changed the channel. Not only were they glaringly ignorant of technological advances in many cases, they were taking this bizarre "exploitation bad" mindset, and still thinking that we're going just to admire the scenery! I stayed for an agonizing 45 minutes, then walked.

But it was all made better. Match Game SF. I haven't laughed that hard in years.

After that I bummed around with [livejournal.com profile] kshandra and [livejournal.com profile] murphymom for a bit, took a bit of nap. and went for my last panel of the day. One System To Rule Them All. Great amounts of d20 bashing, good discussion of constitutes a true universal system, and social contract in gaming.

Which bring us up to date. Later tonight is the second night of the party (theme: "Please Eat Our Food") and then tomorrow I have two panels and will take a lot of time to relax, maybe go for a swim and soak.

Imagination: priceless!" ;)

I'm so glad to hear you're having a great time -- yay! So, explain "But in purple I'm stunning" please? For some reason my brain insists I should already know this... ;)

This year's theme is "Tales of Purple Space." I'm sure this one is a quote from our ChairPurple.
