Got home from a very long day yesterday and found that my copy of the Astrogator's Handbook had arrived.
I'm in love. 3500 stars, more or less, with everything we know about them. Location, class and size, surface temp.. everything! Plus good chapters on astronomy and how to use the book. Nice thing is because I bought the Deluxe Edition (color maps) I also got the .pdf download - more usability. I'm going to be spending many wonderful moments with this and GURPS Space (once SJG gets the comps mess straightened out. I'm owed two books at this point.)
Just looking at one of the 63 quadrant maps gave me ideas. The maps are arraigned this way. There are seven layers, each 150x150 light years in length and width, and varying depth:
Far North Stars (25ly deep)
Middle North Stars (20ly deep)
Near North Stars (20ly deep)
Home Stars (20ly deep)
Near South Stars (20ly deep)
Middle South Stars (20ly deep)
Far South Stars (25ly deep)
Each layer is then divided into nine quadrants; 50x50x20ly (except for the Far North and South layers) So the level of detail on the quadrant maps is excellent.
Oh yes, this is a good thing.
Bonds just hit #710. I think he has his swing back.
In the last two days of work, I have driven more than enough to have taken me from here to Los Angeles. They told me my route was the long one, and boy, did they mean it! Which is good, since I love driving.
Finally, and related to my gushing about the Astrogator's Handbook, I've realized that there is no reason for the Concordat to be HQ'd on Earth. In fact, given my time line (the Concordat was born out of a revolt against the UN Hegemony) placing the capital on another world makes sense. Earth would still be the economic, population, and cultural powerhouse of human space, but moving the capital gives flavor to another world. Also allows me to finally complete the name of the state with the location where the Concordat was made.
I've decided that the Centauri system will have its planets named after figures from the Norse mythos.. Aesir for Alpha Centauri A, Vanir for B. So, the alliance against the Earth-centered government, and the government that replaced it, will be the Balder Concordat.
So, what should the worlds around Proxima be named after? The Giants?
