"The great uncertainty of all data in war is a peculiar difficulty, because all action must, to a certain extent, be planned in a mere twilight, which in addition not infrequently — like the effect of a fog or moonshine — gives to things exaggerated dimensions and unnatural appearance." - Carl von Clausewitz
Ah, how things can turn in war. A few turns ago I was looking at having to hammer my way onto a heavily defended world holding the vast majority of Ckat's remaining population and resources. Instead, a bad decision by him and some good luck on my side has ended the war.
As y'all may recall, I was building up forces on two staging worlds while Ckat bunkered down on his home world of Millenium. He had close to 2700FP stacked up there, with a lot of cannon-fodder units to protect his big guns. I had amassed over 2000FP at Ertswhile, 29 "units" away from Millenium (my slowest ship moves at 50 units/turn) with another thousand or so FP at Diurna (57 units from Millenium.) I literally had dozens of ships and hundreds of land units racing to these two worlds from all over the map. My problem was this: every turn I delayed gave Ckat more time to build up or stage a breakout. So I decided to launch a 2-stage attack. I moved Battle Fleet Screaming For Vengeance (2200FP) from Erstwhile to Millenium, and Battle Fleet Holy Diver Went from Diurna to Ertswhile. This happened on Turn 75. The plan was to sacrifice Screaming for Vengeance to soften things up for Holy Diver.
Last night I watched the news from Washington, the capitol
The Russians escaped while we weren't watching them, like Russians will
Now we've got all this room, we've even got the moon
And I hear the U.S.S.R. will be open soon

On Turn 76 I got a shock. Ckat had fled Millenium, leaving only static defenses. It was still a tough fight. The bulk of his fleet showed up at Avoy (72 units from Millenium) destroying my small garrison there. I now had the bulk of his remaining population, and he had almost nothing. Seriously, I do not understand this move. I began moving fleets to shore up defenses in systems around Avoy, and sent Battle Fleet Defenders of the Faith towards Avoy as a spoiling attack. My main goal was to pin Ckat in that system. I debated sending Screaming for Vengeance in immediate pursuit, but after looking at the reinforcements showing up in the next few turns, I decided to hold off. And that made all the difference.
I was waiting for two specific units to show up. The HC-4 Space Runway isn't just a formidable combatant on its own, it's presence in a battle gives all the "X ships" (X-5 Raider, X-6 Instigator, X-7 Corvette, and X-8 Assault Shuttle) and extra attack each round and a boost to defense. Since my fleet had almost 300 of these ships, the extra boost would be most welcome. Also, I had a swarm of Nozema Fighters incoming. They are more effective in large numbers.. for every hundred in a fleet, each fighter gets an extra attack (up to five extra attacks per fighter for 500+ fighters in the fleet.)
On Turn 79 , Ckat showed up again at Millenium. I guess he expected me to launch immediately against Avoy. He guessed wrong. His fleet ran into Screaming for Vengeance which was still in orbit absorbing close to 500FP in reinforcements. I had 2344.22 fire power. He brought 2023.59 to the party. The battle lasted 7 rounds, and ended any threat Ckat posed. I lost almost 1300FP worth of units, he lost everything.
On Turn 80, the "spoiling attack" by Defenders of the Faith (Supported by Hell Bent for Leather, my fast response fleet) turned into the crowning moment of my victory. Defenders massed 668.31FP. Hell Bent carried 72.56. They faced a mere 40.71 (54 Nozema Fighters and 12 Sentinels of Garsasso) It was over in one round of combat.
So, to sum up. We started with six players.
Brigid never logged in after Turn 4. So he was a non-factor. (I took his only world on Turn 28)
Pasoliatti was eliminated by Ckat on Turn 5.
Crispin was eliminated by Saxondog on Turn 17
Saxondog was eliminated by me on Turn 72
Ckat was eliminated by me on Turn 80
I eliminated three opponents, and won with 20 turns remaining.
