Giants beat Brewers in spring opener
Giants 10, Brewers 5
at Maryvale Baseball Park
Thursday, March 2
Giants at the plate: San Francisco scored five runs before the Brewers recorded an out in the third inning, three of them coming on Ray Durham's bases-clearing, go-ahead double. Leadoff man Randy Wynn put the visitors on the board with a leadoff home run on the game's fourth pitch, and Todd Linden went 3-for-3 with a run scored, an RBI and a stolen base.
Brewers at the plate: Utility man Corey Hart, filling in while left fielder Carlos Lee works out with the Panamanian entry to the World Baseball Classic, was credited with a two-run double when the left-fielder, Linden, lost a fly ball in the sun. Catcher Damian Miller had two hits, including an RBI single.
Giants on the mound: Starter Noah Lowry was charged with three runs on three hits in 1 2/3 innings of work, but right-hander Brad Hennessey shut down the Brewers over three innings, allowing just one hit and notching a pair of strikeouts. Jeff Miller (1-0) took the win.
Brewers on the mound: Left-hander Dana Eveland (0-1) surrendered five runs on four hits without recording an out in the third inning.
"I felt like I had a cannon on my shoulder," Eveland said. "But I had no control of it at all."
Starter Chris Capuano surrendered Wynn's leadoff homer, but he worked out of further damage, and reliever Matt Wise surrendered a two-run home run in the ninth inning to Justin Knoedler.
Cactus League records: Giants 1-0; Brewers 0-1.
Up next: The Brewers and Giants will meet again on Friday across town at Scottsdale Stadium, with Milwaukee newcomer Dave Bush scheduled to lead a split-squad of Brewers against right-hander Matt Cain of the Giants.
The Brewers also will play the A's at Phoenix Municipal Stadium. Right-hander Rick Helling is scheduled to start that game against Oakland righty Joe Blanton.
Yaaayyyyyy!!!!! Baseball!
