Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] wcg for pointing this out.

The political tactic of playing up the soldiers on the battlefield while tearing down the reputations of veterans who oppose them could eventually cost the Republicans dearly. It may be one reason that a preponderance of the Iraq war veterans who thus far have decided to run for office are doing so as Democrats.

This ties in nicely with the fact that you have to really search to find someone at the White House with combat experience. The only member of the cabinet with real military experience, Colin Powell, was shoved out the door. The rest of the inner circle all managed to avoid overseas service despite being the perfect age for service in Vietnam.

I'm not one for name calling, but "chickenhawk" really applies. And I think the American people are starting to get sick of it.

Meantime, Bush keeps cutting the benefits veterans were promised for their service.

It goes to all levels, too. Notice how one of our favorite people who shall remain nameless likes to claim that President Bushs faced more danger while in the military than, say, you did.

The present-day GOP only really likes soldiers who go out and fight while keeping their mouths shut. Soldiers who think for themselves, especially if they are less than reverential toward their political leadership, are not to be tolerated.
