I'm familiar with this issue. You're dead on.

What the Republicans do not realize is that they throw the entire legitimacy of the United States government into question -- which is much, much more important than which party happens to be screwing up in the White House at the moment.

I vote by paper ballot.

One problem, Diebold was started in the 1800's and at least one of the parent companies of ES&S was around since the late '70's.

This means that these same companies, and probably some of the same people in them, were providers for the 1992 and 1996 elections that got us Clinton and Gore...

...not exactly a record for partisanship.

Now, I do agree that their should be some non-governmental, at least non-Federal governmental oversight agency and that it should be run by, perhaps, state-level representatives.

What I don't understand is why the Federal election ballot is so complicated.

I mean, I realize that you Yanks vote on a lot more than we do up here, and that the abllot gets filled up with other stuff. What I don't understand is why you don't have two ballots: one simple one for the president, and one as complicated as you like for the assistant dog-catchers assistant, and all the other cruft that is currently on the Federal ballot.

You could then do a hand-count of the Federal votes, preserving the ballots to allow for a recount when necessary and to avoid all hints of impropriety.
