And the computer is no longer flickering along with the lights, I present:
Doug's Big 2005 Wrap-Up Post!
Let's begin with a little meme I ganked from
soobunny
1. What did you do in 2005 that you'd never done before? Left a job because I had a better offer. I did that twice in a month! Before, I left a job because I was sick of it, or was dismissed. It was nice to realize that with the first one, I was leaving because of a better chance, and with the second, for the opportunity to have an actual career.
2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year? I'll give myself a 50% here. Take a look what I posted last year. I did improve my job situation, was a bit more social, and started the process on getting my teeth dealt with. On the other hand, I didn't finish a story for publication, didn't ride, and work prevented me from getting to many Giants games.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth? Yes! My sister Ann had her first, Kylie the Wonder Baby! Also, friends of Kirsten had a child.
4. Did anyone close to you die? No, no one I'd call close.
5. What countries did you visit? I was a stay at home this year. Although we are in the early planning stages for an actual vacation in 2007.
6. What would you like to have in 2006 that you lacked in 2005? A World Series championship!!! Seriously, I'm not a material person, and I'm at an almost-comfortable point right now when it comes to security.
7. What date from 2005 will remain etched upon your memory, and why? July 18. I start at PODS.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year? Mastering my new job. Actually walking into a dentist's office and getting in the chair without fleeing in terror.
9. What was your biggest failure? Not writing. Too many times I sat down at the computer and talked myself out of starting work.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury? Other than the usual colds and intestinal bugs, no.
11. What was the best thing you bought? GURPS: Infinite Worlds
12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
kshandra, who took a ten-week temp assignment and turned it into six months of employment and a stunning letter of recommendation. When she gets down to work, she rocks.
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed? The entire Bush administration.
14. Where did most of your money go? Rent and food, plus gas for the car.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about? Barry Bonds' return to the line-up, the Niners' getting the first pick in the draft, my new jobs.
16. What song will always remind you of 2005? Hm. Hard call. Probably 3 Doors Down - When I'm Gone. Along with having friends serving overseas, It's a song about changes, and I certainly saw enough of those this past year.
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? Happier.
ii. thinner or fatter? Still a human stick.
iii. richer or poorer? Richer.
18. What do you wish you'd done more of? Socializing.
19. What do you wish you'd done less of? Procrastinating.
20. How did you spend Christmas? With family at my mom's place, then later with Kirsten's mom and half-brother.
21. How did you be spend New Year's? Went to a lovely party at Grand Central Starport
22. Did you fall in love in 2005? Yes, with my lovely wife every day.
23. How many one-night stands? LOL! None.
24. What was your favorite TV program? We cut the cable off in early summer to save money. Before that, it was a toss-up between Countdown with Keith Olbermann on MSNBC and Baseball Tonight on ESPN.
25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year? Well, there's someone at work who is really beginning to piss me off...
26. What was the best book you read? 1632 by Eric Flint and Settling Accounts: Drive To The East by Harry Turtledove.
27. What was your greatest musical (re)discovery? Another toss-up. I rediscovered Iron Maiden, and found Dean Gray - American Edit.
28. What did you want and get? Those new jobs.
29. What did you want and not get? A motorcycle.
30. What was your favorite film of this year? King Kong
31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you? Along with the traditional taco bash at my mom's we went to Bone Bash VI to see Judas Priest, and to a Giants game. I turned 39.
32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying? If Bonds had been healthy all season and we had won the bloody World Series.
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2005? The same as 1995, 1985, and 1975. t-shirts and blue jeans.
34. What kept you sane? Sarcasm. Beer. Baseball. Kirsten.
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most? Don't really notice them.
36. What political issue stirred you the most? The ongoing revelations of abuses of the law by the White House and senior GOP members of Congress.
37. Who did you miss?
fimbrethil,
eleri.. and their kids.
38. Who was the best new person you met? Sergio, my now former boss at PODS.
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2005: Keep digging! I applied for dozens of new jobs before I finally struck gold.
40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year: "No, you're never too old to Rock'n'Roll if you're too young to die."
Well, that was fun. Now, let's make some resolutions
1. Continue on the dental work. It's going to suck, in ways physical, mental, and financial, but it has to be done.
2. Get the bike fixed and ride a minimum of one mile every day, three on days off.
3. Write! Set a schedule, finish the Concordat outline, and get it down.
4. Clean the apartment and do what it takes to keep it clean.
5. Continue attempts to increase my social circle and life.
6. Attend at least ten Giants games, including at least one against the Dodgers.

Resolutely resolving
Date: 2 Jan 2006 21:43 (UTC)Write down a schedule which gives you at least 15 minutes everyday to write. Anybody can do almost anything for 15 minutes. Don't go to bed until you've written something, even if it's only on a napkin or scratch paper.
Speaking on that topic, may I base a character on you? I'm thinking of the captain of the "Special MAgics Revocation Team" (otherwise known as the SMART) Contact me by lindline or e-mail with your response.
Come over and visit us now and then, we need to get out and soc too, but with wee 'uns it's a bit less trivial.
Now excuse me, I've got to keep my resolution to learn HTML & Java.
