We were listening to my playlist on WinAmp, and Queenryche's Silent Lucidity came up. Remarking on its imagry, I mentioned that I now wanted to hear Genesis' Entangled. So I dug out the CD and started it.

This is, by far, Genesis' best album. And Phil Collins was once a serious musician. what happened?

Aliens. Has to be. They kidnapped Phil Collins and replaced him with a robot designed to push out dreck like No Jacket Required to demoralize us for the coming attack.

(Kirsten just commented "You realize we're writing a South Park episode, right?")

Heck, I have a Brand X album with Phil singing in Sanskrit. He was once not just serious, but seriously weird. I think your alien-abduction theory might just be worth pursuing.

I like his stuff on Tarzan.
Which is not to say I don't also like Invisible Touch et al.

We figured the abduction had to be circa '98ish - the point at which he announced during one of his solo concerts that he had left Genesis (much to the amazement of Mssrs. Banks and Rutherford) and informed his wife via fax that he was filing for divorce. So Invisible Touch is in the clear. And he wasn't working alone on the stuff for the Hall of the Mouse King, so the worst of the sickness wouldn't be obvious.
