Believe me, it boggles MY mind, too. I'd never live there, but I know people who do. One guy I know -- a fellow Traveller player -- had a room that was about half the size of my basement. It was pretty grim considering how much he must be paying for that closet of an apartment (as comfortable as it might be.)
I couldn't live there, even if I could afford the rent. Well... all right, the Village would be a nice place to live, and SoHo... but outside of that, no.
