I got to work today... and stepped into hell.

One worker had called in sick.

Two new hires didn't bother to show up.

I spent the first hour running a register without a cash drawer. Plastic and checks only. I announced this every two minutes, but of course morons ignored me and walked up with cash. Most were not pleased when I directed them to my manager's equally long line. Teach them not to listen to me!

Eventually, a second manager made it in, and I got a drawer. I was then basically the only cashier in the store. On a Sunday.

My first "break" was me standing at my register counting credit slips so I didn't fall hopelessly behind. My lunch came after 5 hours. At that point, a fourth employee had called off. Four employees on one day. Luckily, one person came in to help out.

By the time we closed, we were dead. We had mountains of go-backs, the store was a shambles (you couldn't walk down the main basket aisle.. the alleged adults who shop at our store trashed it completely) and we had to flat-out tell two people to get out of the store.

We did our best, but the store looked like crap when we left. The note left for our GM was long, pointed, and included the phrase "boil the no-shows in oil." (My suggestion.)

Kirsten was wonderful and made me dinner, and I'm going to drop[ dead asleep in a while. Thank the powers I don't work tomorrow.

I feel for you. You have my sympathy. I had days like that when I worked at Nature Company. Blah. The worst ones were between "Black Friday" and New Years Day.

Cost Plus World Market (http://www.costplus.com/index.htm)

I like working there, but weekends are bad to begin with, and having a total of four people not show up made it horrendous.

I'm guessing the two new hires may be replaced with other new hires. At least, I hope so.

Oh, yeah.. Sofia called them before she left for the day to tell them they have been dismissed for failing to show up.

That really, seriously sucks. Makes me (a little bit) glad that my job doesn't involve facing customers, just cleaning up after messy bastards.
