Barry did it last night. 700 career homeruns.
Facing Jake Peavy leading off the third, Bonds lifted a 0-1 curve ball just over the fence in left field. Not the most impressive shot he's made, but it made it over the wall and into history.
The chase:
Babe Ruth. 15 to pass
Hank Aaron: 56 to pass
I was at work, and didn't hear about the homerun until after we closed. Our part-time bookkeeper tracks scores on his cell phone. I asked him if he knew the Giants score. He said it was a Giants win. I commented that I just needed to learn if Bonds had hit a HR, and he told me that he had seen the hit before he came into work! Jeez, it would have killed him to tell me?
So, as of right now we're 2.5 games back of the Dodgers (spit) for the National League West title, and are holding onto a half-game lead in the NL Wildcard.
