Week 8 is in the book, and the Wildcats are a solid 5-2, and lead the AFC West by a the hair of having beaten the San Diego Chargers, who are also 5-2.

So, let's look at the Wildcats. The parenthetical numbers are their overall rating at their position, out of a possible 100. Here is my list of players..

Tillman Field, San Jose. Night game, and the place is packed. The stands are rocked by a panther's howl, and the endzone screens show an animated black panther leaping into the team logo. As (insert appropriate rock anthem) is played, the stadium announcer yells:

"Ladies and gentlemen, your Division-leading SAN JOSE WIIILLDCAAATSS!!!

"At Quarterback, Donovan McNabb (93). Halfback Warrick Dunn, (83) and Cory Schlesinger at Fullback (85)"

You can see where my success begins. McNabb is a great asset, as he is a danger to run when he has to. Dunn can break tackles like a FB, and Schlesinger has speed like a HB.

"Wide receivers Eric Moulds (89) and Amani Toomer (83). Tight end Freddie Jones (84)"

A good solid receiving corps. All were chosen for not only catching ability, but for speed. Many times I've seen short passes go for long TDs simply because my receivers outran the defense.

"And now, the offensive lineman, from left to right, Lomas Brown (76), Barry Stokes (68), Matt Birk (93), Rich Tylski (77), and Marcus Spears (72)."

My line needs a little shoring up. I'm not too happy, especially since the depth chart is really weak here.

"And now, the starting defensive unit for your Wildcats, the place where drives go to die, the PURPLE WALL!!

"The front four, Aaron Smith (84), Gary Walker (80), Norman Hand (82) and Mark Smith (69)"

I run a 4-3 defense most of the time. My ends were selected for speed, they are very good at escaping blocks to cover off-tackle plays. The tackles were drafted for their sheer strength - I want them to open holes for my blitz plays.

"The Terrible Trio - linebackers Anthony Simmons (81), Wali Rainer (74), and Larry Atkins (66)!"

I'm not too pleased with the way the middle group turned out. Again, I was looking for speed, but what I ended up with was some mediocre players.

"Finally, don't even think about it, because Tillman is a NO-PASSING ZONE! Your defensive backfield! Cornerbacks R.W. McQuarters (80) and Fernando Bryant (72), Free Safety Kwamie Lassiter (92) and Strong Safety John Lynch!"

I wanted to stop the passing game cold. I have. McQuarters has been a real joy, as his speed gets him into the backfield on sweeps and he has several tackles for losses.

There is silence, the crowd mutters.. suddenly the PA blares again.

"Oh yeah.. the kickers..ladies, yada, yada, yada.. kicker Olindo Mare (97) and punter Darren Bennett (95)."

My punter is the best paid lady-in-waiting in football. It's rare that the he asked to do his job more than two or three times a game.

So, next up, a clash of powers as the 6-1 San Francisco 49ers make the trip down 101 to play the 5-2 Wildcats. Oh, NcNabb, Dunn, Schlesinger, Moulds, McQuarters, and Lassiter have all been selected to the Pro-Bowl

Lemme hear you ROAR, people!

Just out of curiosity, have the Wildcats had problems with the same teams I earlier identified as tough opponents?
