If you had a hard time with Joyce, James - A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man Eliot, George - The Mill on the Floss, will probably give you an anuerism, or at least make you pray for one. This was the novel that showed me just how much I couldn't stand Victorian literature. I'd rather sit through a Roger Corman remake of the Seven Samurai than read that thing again.

I can heartily recommend: Marquez, Gabriel García - One Hundred Years of Solitude. Excellent book.

I was never able to make it through Pynchon's book, I plan on trying again one of these days.

Heller, Joseph - Catch-22 - I actually got into it with one of my lit prof's because of this book, the idea that not every American soldier didn't want to be in the war offended his sensibilities. He based this belief on stories his uncle has told him, I was surprised I got as high a grade as I did.
