"An invisible choir sings, and you are bathed in radiance..."
Congrats to Lilith the Valkyrie, who was just welcomed into demi-goddess status by Odin in the game of Nethack I just finished. This was one of those games I started just idle away some time.. she had such bizarre runs of good and bad luck I thought that getting her throughout the end game was hopeless. She had all the good armor, but no way to improve it. The moment I blew up Vorpal Blade by to over-enchant it, I got Mojo, and so on.
Killed all the regular demon lords plus Yeenoghu, took out Rodney a total of six times, five of them with the wand of death. It was odd, he never appeared until I had made it up to like 12th level, then he appeared four times in the next five!
Amazingly, I did most of the Elemental Plane of Air blinded! last four shots for the wand of death took out the Air Elementals from HELL (get engulfed by them and your hit points fall faster than Enron stock) and found the portal by accident. On the plane of fire, a fire vortex did the job for me.
On the Astral Plane, I had enough oomph to kick serious butt with the aid of the Guardian Angel Odin finally sent me (where was he when I needed him in Gnomish Mines, huh?) Killed Pestilence six times, Famine four, and Death two. Of course, with three temples to pick from I chose the two wrong ones to start with.
But I ascended. Took about five days of off and own playing, but I done it! Now, I can get back to building worlds!

Date: 18 Feb 2002 07:28 (UTC)My character was named Lilith, and her class was Valkyrie. Along the way I did a stupid thing which cost me one of the better weapons in the game. "Mojo" is slang for Mjolonir, Thor's hammer, which Valks can get as a gift from the Gods.
During the game, you have to pass through the lairs of several demon lords. There are also random demon lords that the others can bring in to help them. I had to kill one of those wanderers.
"Rodney" is slanf for the Wizard of Yendor, who holds one of the artifiacts you need to get the games objective, the Amulet of Yendor, and will come after you as long as you have it. He gains a level of experience every time you kill him, so having a good insta-death hing handy like a wand of death is highly recommended.
The end game is the four elemental planes, and the Astral plane. Of these, the plane of Air is by far the hardest, since the air elementals can kill even the toughest character dead in only a few rounds. I had to do this level while blind from a lightning bolt.
On the Astral Plane, there are three temples, one to each alignment, and butt-load of difficult foes dedicated to stopping you from reaching them. You get an ally, an Angel sent by Odin who will fight with you. There are also three Riders, Plague, Death, and Famine. Palgues gives you a horrid disease, for which you either need a spell of cure sickness, or lots of powerfull healing potions. Death drains your hit points, and is a wimp. Famine causes you hunger. To much hunger, and you pass out! Have a lot of bite-sized foods like cram rations. Like Rodney, they regenerate.
They only way to identify which temple is which is to get close enough to either stand on the altar, or to come in line of sight of the high priest. I tried the two wrong ones first. *sigh*
