Wow.

Just, wow. I first read the trilogy when I was about 15, and have always wondered if anyone could ever get the grandeur and scope of Tolkein's epic vision onto the screen. Now I know, it was Peter Jackson.

Return of the King is simply the best movie I've seen in years. Along with the sweeping battles, impeccable CGI, and stunning sets, he directs the characters with a touch that makes every single one come alive, you really feel the madness of the Steward of Gondor, Pippin and Merry's changes from happy-go-lucky hobbits to warriors.. and Sam and Frodo's struggles to complete an impossible task. Andy Sirkis, who gave both voice and body mapping to Gollum, I can not say enough about the job he did.

Shelob was appropriately creepy. The Witch-King and his mount were neat. Minas Tirith was impressive as hell. Everything worked, simple as that.

The multiple ending scenes were a bit of a distraction, but there were so many plots to wrap up! I love how Jackson managed to deftly remove some bits of the book and cover for their absence. Keeping the author's original closing line also made me happy.

What didn't make me happy was the idiots who brought a five-tear old to a 3 hour+ movie! And did little to control him. Yeah, everybody had only been waiting for at least two years for this. But even the kid couldn't dampen the enthusiasm in the theater. Every victory was met by applause, and wild cheering in some places.

Mr. Jackson, you did it right!
