Once more into the breach!

I'm getting ready to go take the test for the Communications Dispatcher I position for San Mateo County. This counts as 50% of the hiring process. The other 50% is an interview later this month.
I have an entire Alpha Strike of butterflies flying racetracks, with more on the catapults and at +5 readiness. If I get this job, I'm making 40 grand a year to start. If I don't...
I'd rather not think about that.

Date: 5 Feb 2002 10:06 (UTC)Some parts were fairly easy, but others were extremely difficult and annoying. Things like the dispatching aptitude test:
You get three units and three zones. Each of the units is assigned as primary, secondary, or third for each zone. You then are given the assignment rules for emergency and non-emergency calls. You then are given sets of calls to answer in each zone, and the status of each unit. In some of the cases, the correct answer is to send no units.
The worst was the code recognition test. You had a worksheet that looked like this:
1. nQ N2 2M Mq 2q
2. 3y6 C6Y 63Y Y36 cy3
and so on, for 60 lines. The tape just states one of the codes for each line, without giving the line number! And it gets faster. And faster. And FASTER until the last few sound like this:
5j39g06tR49k37ys5fk3l7n2hu882nd...
Obviously, you can't get all of them. The test is to see how many you can get right, and how well you can at least follow along. After we had marked the work sheet, we had five whole minutes to transfer our answers to the Scantron sheet.
There were around 260 people invited, about 240 showed up. By the end of the test, at least fifty had left. They have about ten openings.
I think I did ok.
