Greetings from Kinkos, where I am posting to let y'all know that my home box has gone on strike.

It started with a definite clicking sound on start-up. Then, the machine would suddenly mysteriously reset and go into the whole boot process at random moments. Now, it refuses to start at all.

sigh

Hopefully, it won't be something dreadfully expensive.

If you need to contact me, call me at (408) 269-3637.

On the reasonable assumption that you need a not-very-big IDE drive, I think I have a couple in the house in the 2-4 GB range. Not huge, but enough to get you back on the web.

It's also possible that the problem is the CPU fan, especially if it's been noisy recently.

Betcha it's the power supply. Those can be had pretty cheaply, but try to avoid the *very* cheapest or you'll just be buying a new one (and possibly frying other components) soon.

Could be. I have a spare -- high quality, hardly used because it's loud (PC Power & Cooling Turbo-Cool).

Bottom line: if you can bring the box to the Starport on Wednesday night, we may be able to fix it. Or at least figure out what's wrong.

That's a cause I'd be willing to use the work-van (my only mode of transport currently) for. We'll stop by for a bit.

Was indeed the PS, plus the fact that somewhere in the failure process the BIOS apparently became convinced that it had an 866MHZ CPU instead of a 433. Seems to be working now.
