misdev and zebragrrl gave kshandra and myself a stack of about 14 CDs filled with MP3s of all styles, from classical guitar to the Sex Pistols. It is a wonderful gift, and I thank them profusely.

BUT...

(you knew there had to be a "but" in here, right?)

There are some howling mistakes in attributing bands. For example, Sweet Home Alabama is listed as being a Steve Miller Band song. There's a Pink Floyd track attributed to The Who. My Future's So Bright (I gotta wear shades) is listed as being by ZZ Top. There are a few other woofers in there as well. So copying tracks will require attention to detail.

Again, please don't think I'm complaining about the gift.. there's a ton of music in here that I love! Like this track, fer instance..

It's entirely possible, if they got the tracks off of Napster/Gnutella/Kazaa, that the tracks had incorrect attributions when they were downloaded. I use to run into this all the time when I used to surf the sharing sites reguarly.

Of course, every now and again, you'd get a really nifty cover. (I somewhere have REM doing any number of covers, including 'I Will Survive', and Sarah McLaughlin doing XTC's 'Dear God'.)

Absolutely positive. I have (and love) the Cake cover, but this one is decidedly REM. At some point, Michael Stipe can't remember any more of the words and mumbles "that's all I can remember".

That's pretty much what I figured, but it was a bit of a shock to see House of the Rising Sun listed as a Doors track!

Reminds me of when I went on a Joni Mitchell downloading expotition and wound up with a mislabeled Dusty Springfield track instead. I am not complaining, mind you.

ALL of it was indeed downloaded from napster.. so none of it's MY fault..

and i know you love it.. thats why i loaned it to kiri, cause i know everyone needs good tunes..
