I found a great freeware astronomy program called Celestia. This thing gives you first-person views of stars, planets, even asteroids as you fly through the solar system (and to other stars as well.)

It's a big download, took me half an hour on our dial up connection, but well worth it. From what I saw it works on most platforms.

Oh it's neat!

Should I mention it took me less than a minute and half to download?

SQUEEEEE!

I've had it for a while. Very cool, in an astronomy geek kind of way.

I replaced the default start script with one that puts me in geosynchronous orbit above my home (though at a mere 3 radii, rather than a more accurate 5.61). Here it is, if you're interested:

{
select { object "Sol/Earth" }
center { time 1 }
synchronous {}
gotolonglat { time 1 distance 3 longitude -123 latitude 44 }
}
