gridlore: The word Giants over a baseball (Baseball - SF Giants)

One good bit of news this week. Back in December, we bought a Giants ticket voucher pack, enough for us to go to two games. It was a bit of a nightmare to figure out, and we ended up having to spend more money t9 sit in the same section for one game, but two dates to visit the most beautiful ballpark in the world and cheer on the G-men.

The first game is against the Marlins on (what we hope will be) Opening Day weekend.

The second is on July 27th against the Milwaukee Brewers. Now, my family has a history with the Brewers. My grandfather was a baseball fanatic and loved the Milwaukee team. Braves, Brewers, minor or major league, he was there.

Some of my best memories of visiting Gramma and Grandpa was going to County Stadium to see a baseball game. He had seats in the front row right behind home plate shaded to the first base side. The weather was always great, I got to eat a ton of junk food, and even if I didn't understand what I was watching, I was there with my Grandpa! He even taught me to keep score!

Sadly, he's been gone for many years now.

But when we go to the game against the Brew Crew, I'll be carrying a sign:

GRANDPA WAS A [Brewers logo] FAN.

SORRY, GRANDPA. [SF Giants logo]

I'm peeved that they replaced County Stadium with Miller Park. I'll always be a Brewers fan, but I do have a soft spot for the Giants, et cetera. The Raiders are an exception, the false-hearted gits.

It skipped my mother somehow, but I am a descendant of a long line of Cardinals baseball fans. I could probably have a similar sign.

My great-grandfather was a strict, stern Lutheran preacher who refused to have a television in his home and decried the whole idea of television because it was sinful and had dancing girls on it. (We don't know how he knew that if he'd never seen any television.) But he also always had a small portable radio glued to his ear during baseball season.

His family tricked him into coming over for a playoff game barbecue after buying a shiny new postwar black and white television.

Grandpa backed into the room, refusing to look at the screen, decrying sinfulness and saying he would not be in a house with such an infernal sin machine, all while holding the pregame radio to his ear.

His sons-in-law looked innocently at him. "But sir! The baseball game will be on any minute!"

Reportedly his face went through convolutions, and he slowly lowered his little radio to realize that the same noise was coming from the television right behind him.

"They have... BASEBALL on television?" he whispered, in the voice of a man having a crisis of faith.

"They sure do, sir! It's almost like being at the stadium! Have a look, the game's about to start."

"ONLY the baseball," he said firmly, and allowed himself to be led to a comfortable seat and gotten out of the way of the television. "No dancing girls."

"Oh, of course, sir."

I've never been to a STL-SFO game. But when I'm with family, I argue with the other in-laws (who are things like Texas or Kansas City fans) and try not to say a word against the Cardinals. Not after we sang "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" at Grandma's funeral and an actual cardinal bird landed ten feet away and sang his little lungs out at us.
