A visit to old San Francisco

Film taken from a streetcar trundling down Market St. in 1905. This was less than a year before the Great Earthquake and Fire leveled the city. The building at the end of the street with the tower is the Ferry Building, which still stands and now serves as a market place as well as still handling ferries from Marin and the East Bay. Look for the cop, the boys hawking papers, and an Army officer on a horse.

Well, that was unpleasant.

kshandra is driving me into work this week, as Darby's check engine light came on and we're still broke from the epic Quest for a Driver's License. I've been feeling a bit rundown all week, hovering on the edge of some sort of illness. Woke up this morning feeling a little nauseous. We get in the car, head out, and when we're on the ramp from 85S to 87N my stomach decides that motion is a bad thing. Flips, flops, and a triple axel (nailed the landing, too!) Tell Kiri that it would be best to turn around and head home. Call My Three Bosses (two of them, actually, but the joke is better with three) and stagger back upstairs.

I won't bother y'all with the details, but let's just say that this was a smart decision, and I'm glad I took my teeth out when i got home. Having a beer to help settle my stomach, then probably naptime.

One year ago today.

In the heat of the Presidential race, Senator John McCain was booked to be David Letterman's only guest. In the midst of the deepening economic crisis, McCain announced that he was suspending his campaign and flying back to Washington immediately to work on the crisis. (This was odd, as McCain was not on the Senate Banking Committee and had no leadership role in the GOP Senate caucus.)

Letterman called in Keith Olbermann as a substitute guest, and what followed may well have tipped the electoral momentum.

The lesson here? If you are going to bail on David Letterman, don't lie about it!
