Today dawned full of promise. I had things to do, places to go, and was hopeful that I'd get good news from my doctor.

Everything worked. (Well, one minor exception, but that wasn't important.)

Yesterday I sent an email to Dr. C pretty much demanding that he either release me for work or give me an actual diagnosis and plan for treatment. Since I knew I was going to be out all day, I asked him to call me.

I was going out because I was meeting a couple of friends,([livejournal.com profile] murbin and Glen the Stern Solicitor (and part-time ambassador from Mongo.. no, not that one, the Traveller one.) along with a friend of Glen's. Kirsten drove me over to Diridon Station where I caught Caltrain up to the City. I love taking trains, the rhythms, watching the world roll by. No better way to travel, in my humble opinion. Other than zeppelins, of course.

As is normal for me, I got to San Francisco early. So I decided to take a walk. The 4th street station is only three blocks from AT&T Park. Despite all the times I've been there, I've never walked along the portwalk along McCovey Cove. Very nice, especially reading all the event plaques... lots of Bonds, of course, but Robb Nen's 300th career save and Jason Schmidt's 16 strikeouts on June 6, 2002.

From there, I walked up to Yerba Buena Gardens. This is where I had been told we were meeting, so I grabbed a water, settled under a tree, and read my book (Rainbow's End by Vernor Vinge). This is what I needed. It was a fantastic day in SF, warm, sunny, just a hint of a breeze. YBG is a beautiful setting with multiple fountains and pathways, very restful. Honestly, I could have sat there for a few hours and then headed home with nothing lost. But I had things to take care off. I called Kiri to see if Dr. C had left a message on the Kaiser mail system. No, but she checked my regular mail and saw that we had moved the meeting place to the Ferry Building. No big. Checked in with Glenn, then headed up Market.

As I approached the foot of Market street, the bells in the clock tower began chiming the noon hour... only to be interrupted by the testing of the outdoor warning system. This is an extremely loud klaxon used if we need to immediately deafen everyone in the Financial District. There was some sort of announcement after the klaxon, but my ears were ringing, so I'm not sure if it said "Danger! Gojira approaches!" or "This was only a test!" Amusingly enough, it was at this exact moment that Dr. C called. He left voice mail

I get to go back to work tomorrow! YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK, this is getting long, and I'm tired of trying to be clever. Eventually we all met up (and kicked ourselves [the locals, anyway] for not remembering that Tuesday's were farmers market day at the Ferry Building) had a lunch that sadly did not work at all for me (something in the five-spice chicken triggered my gag reflex hard) and wandered up the Embarcadero looking at various neat things. Seeing the time, and knowing that tomorrow was going to be rough, I bowed out and took Muni back to the Caltrain station and Kiri picked me up.

End of story.

Damn, I love San Francisco.
