.. that Saddam Hussein International Airport was taken by the 7th United States Infantry. Another battle streamer for the most decorated unit in the US Army. (Our first streamer reads "New Orleans - 1815")

BTW, I've always wanted to ask, what is the derivation of the designation "Infantry"? The closest thing I could come up with was that it might have originated with the French expression "mes enfants" ("my children", or "my sons"), which would be pretty ironic, considering French military history.

From what I've been able to gather, "infantry" was first applied to a body of men collected by the Infante or heir-apparent of Spain for the purpose of rescuing his father from the Moors. The success of the attempt rendered the corps popular. This happened in the late middle ages.

Up until the laste 19th Century, France had a pretty decent military record. They've just been in a slump. :)
