My beloved, but inept 49ers faced a harsh test in this first week of the 2005 season.. the mighty St. Louis Rams. Would a team that was 2-14 last year be able to keep the game from being yet another depressing rout against the rivals who have won 10 of the last 11 meetings?

San Francisco 49ers: 28
St. Louis Rams: 25

Our defense was simply smothering. We recorded seven sacks of Rams' QB Mark Bulger, and had him under heavy pressure all day. Our brand-new 3-4 defense really showed itself to be the versatile machine we were promised. Warning severe football geekery follows ) The influence of assistant head coach/linebacker coach Mike Singletary was clear. Very aggressive play from all the defensive players.

The offense, while not spectacular, played well against a Rams defense that was determined to shut us down. Our running game was pretty much dead (except for a nice 9-yard TD run by Barlow) but the passing game was nice, with Rattay hitting several different targets at all points on the field. We really spread the defense out, which helped us move. Coach Nolan even pulled out some trick plays, such as a swing pass to WR Arnaz Battle, who then set and fired a pass down field to Brandon Lloyd.

Special teams came through too, with rookie WR Fred "Otis" Amey scoring a TD on his first touch of a football in a professional game - a very nice 75 yard punt return. The tricks continued on special teams as well; with the Niners executing a surprise onside kick in the second quarter.

The Rams made it close late, but poor clock management and a critical interception in the closing seconds secured the win.

Read the story!

Next up, The Eagles! Come here TO.. our secondary wants to have a few words with you...

GO NINERS!!

Oh, the Giants lost again.. but Bonds is back tomorrow!

We were listening to my playlist on WinAmp, and Queenryche's Silent Lucidity came up. Remarking on its imagry, I mentioned that I now wanted to hear Genesis' Entangled. So I dug out the CD and started it.

This is, by far, Genesis' best album. And Phil Collins was once a serious musician. what happened?

Aliens. Has to be. They kidnapped Phil Collins and replaced him with a robot designed to push out dreck like No Jacket Required to demoralize us for the coming attack.

(Kirsten just commented "You realize we're writing a South Park episode, right?")
