25 cents gets you three memes
Jun. 1st, 2005 09:16 am1. How long have you been playing video games? 31 years. Scary, isn't it?
2. What's the earliest video game that you can remember playing? Pong. The stand up box. There was a Straw Hat Pizza near my house that we always went to, and they got one of the first boxes.
3. What, if any, video games are you playing now (these days)? Nethack 3.4.3 and Madden NFL 2003 are my two biggies. I also play a lot of Snood and Freecell when bored.
4. What's the last video game that you bought? Madden NFL 2003
5. Name three video games that you played in the past five years that you think were particularly notable, and talk about why. Well, Nethack and Madden are the top two.
Nethack is a simple ASCII-graphics dungeon crawl that is challenging, versatile, and increasingly complex. Dozens of character combinations, hundreds of distinct items, monsters, and artifacts. Side quests. I've been playing for years and still haven't gotten all the tricks down.
Madden.. well, it's football, and good football. The graphics are great, the play smooth, and with numerous playbooks available you can tailor your attack to your team's strengths. Since I play on the PC, I use the "coach mode." I just call the plays and let my players execute them. The off-season portion of the game, where you re-sign players, scout and draft rookies, try for free agents and make trades is just as satisfying as the actual game play!
Over the weekend, I spent about an hour playing Gauntlet II, Dark Legacy at the con. Very impressive. Great graphics and backgrounds combined with classic arcade game play. The end of stage bosses were tough in a solo game, but I made it through.
6. Name five classic or nostalgic games that mean a lot to you and talk about why. Asteroids. When I was a kid i could spend hours playing Asteroids. I was pretty damn good at it.
