gridlore: A Roman 20 sided die, made from green stone (Gaming - Roman d20)

I have a name! After much scouring of the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide, I decided that the city of Heptios in Chessenta as my character's hometown. This city is renowned for its great library, which attracts students from across the region. Looking at the various names, I get a vaguely Celtic feel for the names. So, my Hexbblade is now Kunwal Le Gleau. Heptios is a long way from, the Sword Coast, so I can have a long history pre-game.

After some dicing and slicing, with some fudging of things, I've settled on this background.

Kunwal is the fourth son of a successful bookbinder. Being the fourth son meant dim prospects. Kunwal dreamed of attending the Library and would watch the students and masters in the plaza, envious of their cowls and robes. But the reality was that he would be apprenticed off to whoever would pay a few silver to his father.

Kunwal had his letters, and by eight was writing his father's business correspondence for him. So when Kunwal learned he was to be apprenticed to a leather tannery, he bolted. Gathering all he had, he ran to the hall of scribes at the Library and begged for a chance. The Chief of Scribes and Illumination allowed the sobbing child a chance to show his work. Impressed, he was offered a place as an apprentice.

The library was a revelation. Copying texts meant reading texts, and Kunwal soaked up histories, travelogues, and esoteric dissertations on magic; the gods, and the nature of the multiverse. Soon, he began to resent the monied students, most of whom treated their studies as an afterthought. Even the bulk of his fellow clerks were drudges, more concerned with gossip and wine than the glories they saw every day.

Years passed, and Kunwal realized that the scriptorium was a trap. He could toil for years, keep playing the politics of the Library until he was raised to Chief of Scribes, and still, the Masters and students would see him as a servant. His anger seeped into his dreams, creating nightmares that tormented Kunwal endlessly. Until the night his sleep was peaceful. That was the night he dreamed of a raven that came to him.

"You dream of escape?" The Raven asked, cocking its head to regard Kunwal as he sat up in bed. Kunwal nodded slowly.

"You dream of revenge? Of power?" Suddenly Kunwal was clad in the robes of the Rector, Lord of the Library. Around his neck were the keys to the library's forbidden collection. Kunwal smiled.

"I offer a bargain. I can give you power. I can guide you to greater power. I can show you knowledge undreamt of. I will raise you to where your existence is revenge. But there is a price. I shall task you. Obedience is absolute. My vengeance is undying. A barging is offered, does the man Kunwal Le Gleau accept it?"

I'm not dreaming, Kunwal realized. This has really happened. The Raven cackled as it hopped from foot to foot. "What is real? What is the shadow? Are shadows real? Is reality all just shadows? Is the bargain made?

Kunwal nodded yes. The next morning, it was if nothing had happened. Over the few next weeks, Kunwal learned in his dreams how to cast simple spells, how to use his new abilities, and learned what it was to be called by the Shadowfell. Then came a dream different from the others. An order.

The library was in an uproar. Two students, both from noble houses, were found dead, the bodies mutilated. In the general exodus as students and masters fled in fear of the killer, no one noticed one scribe leaving for good.

Riding a stolen horse westward, Kunwal smiled. He had had another dream, he had a mission and would obey. For he was a Hexblade.

That was fun. OK, equipment. Not much to say here. I have the usual mundane things, bedroll, tinderbox, lantern and oil, and so on. I do own a set of calligrapher's tools and paper, just so I can take notes. I also have a chain shirt (armor class 13 + my Dex bonus, so 14), a dagger, and a set of both common and traveler's clothes. Almost on impulse, I added a set of robes to my shopping list. Even though I paid for them out of my starting gold, I figured this was something Kunwal grabbed on his way out of the Library. A set of Master's robes from the Library of Heptios opens a lot of doors.

Now the fun part. I get four magic items. Three Uncommon, one Rare.

First things first. I need to address my low carrying capacity. So a magical Bag of Holding is my first uncommon item. It can hold up to 64 cubic feet and 500lbs while weighing 15lbs.

Next up, let's boost my armor a bit. A Cloak of Protection adds +1 to my AC and is my second Uncommon item.

Finally, I make my chain shirt an adamantine chain shirt. This keeps me from suffering the effects of critical hits. That's three Uncommon items.

Now the Rare item. You may have noticed that I haven't picked a main weapon yet. I've been saving that. I thought about a flaming sword, but that didn't mesh with my whole "servant of shadows" thing. My Gamemaster suggested the Sword of Life Stealing, but that weapon's special effect on activates on a natural roll of 20.

I found the perfect choice. The Sword of Wounding. Once per turn, when I hit a foe with this sword, I add 1d4 necrotic damage. The target can make a DC 15 Constitution save to stop the effects, but if it doesn't, the damage keeps accruing. If I keep hitting the creature and it fails to save for four straight rounds, that creature will take 4d4 damage and turn without me doing a thing.

Kunwal Le Gleau is ready to play!

Did you steal them at the library, or acquire them in subsequent adventures?
