Remember the old recruiting slogan "The US Army, we do more before 9 AM than most people do all day"? I call any day where I accomplish all my goals before noon an Army day. Because at 51 years of age, noon is the new 0900.

Anyway, I was up bright and early for my fingerprinting and initial interview. The police department is only about five minutes from here, and I know it well. First thing, fingerprinting! Which uses a cool scanner that glows with an eerie green light. I learned something today. The tech asked me if I did a lot of gardening. I replied no, but I had spent years in the Army and driving a truck. She pointed out prominent white streaks on most of my prints. Those are places where my fingertips have been damaged.

The interview itself went very well, we just talked about the job, what I saw it as being, how I worked around kids, things like that. We did get into a little nitty-gritty. I was given a background investigation form to fill out (really simple one) and found the next steps were the background check, a review, and a medical check to make sure I can do the job. We talked about the guards who work near where I live.

If hired, I will be an unsworn employee of the Santa Clara Police Department. I will get a uniform, similar to those worn by the Community Service Officers but with a white shirt. I'll have two orientation sessions, one at City Hall that's for all city employees, and one at the police department. I'll start out as a relief guard, filling in for whoever is out that day. They say that usually after six months or so a corner opens up, and you get to the big leagues. Starting pay is $14.76/hour, which I will note with some level of exasperation is more than I was ever paid to drive a truck massing up to 26,000lbs on the public highways. Maximum hours is 15 a week, and each is split into the morning and afternoon, 1.5 hours each.

Keeping things crossed for that.

After that, I went to the gym. That is becoming easier for me to do as days go by. Good workout and I did my cardio time on the treadmill instead of the bike due to someone already being on it. Really proud of how well I rocked it. As the fifth anniversary of my stroke looms ever closer, I'm becoming keenly aware of just how far I've come in getting back.

Finally, a trip to Rite Aid where I won the prescription lottery. Three refills were waiting for me. That's two trips I don't have to make. Save money where I can.

One last thing. Out of morbid curiosity, I looked up how much an Olympic barbell weighs. That's what I mate with the "landmine" (I swear, Friday, I'll take a picture) to perform several strength exercises. The thing weighs 44lbs by itself, and it's awkward to move. Half the strength conditioning there is getting the barbell out and hooked up, then putting it away!

Still mourning the lack of Mt. Dew Throwback in the apartment.
