There are times when I wish that people would remember that Usenet is text medium, and take the time to make sure their messages make sense. This just showed up in rec.games.frp.dnd:

Subject: D&D char generator, few questions

is the generator like lone wolf entertainments army builder where its a full
reg version when you have the cd and in demo while you dont?

is it worth getting?

i heard it comes witht he players handbook but i got one for christmas and it
didnt come with it.
Steve

I have no bloody idea what he is talking about. There are dozens of DnD items on the web, several of them character generators. The Player's Handbook did come with a demo cd of a character generator, but from what he was saying I couldn't tell if he meant that one.

My rule is to read it out loud if I'm not sure if I'm being unclear.

...I wish that people would remember that Usenet is text medium....

You use the present tense. 99% of today's posters never knew a time when all electronic messaging, and all computer user interfaces, were text. How can we oldsters expect these kids to 'understand'? Some of 'em wouldn't even know what USENET is.

"Hey dude. I'm just using Outlook Express, I'm not doing anything with your Us...net thingy!, Back off."

He's actually *correctly* using the present tense. He said *Usenet*, not "the Internet". Usenet *is* a text medium. and it doesn't even have to be carried by the Internet. Though these days the exceptions to that are few and far between.

I agree with your exception to my statement. My only point was that the vast throng is clueless, careless and wouldn't know the difference.1

1See the USENET FAQ (http://www.faqs.org/faqs/usenet/what-is/part1/) for them that got here and want a clue.

But then, uneducated written communication of unorganized and confused thought by seven year old children might look like the extract you posted.
