I got to listen to today's Giants-White Sox Spring Training game on mlb.com. The site is doing free games throughout the spring to encourage people to pay for the audio/video packages. I was a bit underwhelmed, both with the audio quality and the announcers, but there was one fun thing.
This was an "away" game for the G-men, and we didn't bring many of our starters. This really was a final look game for a lot of players who are about to be sent back to the minor league camp or optioned. There were several times when I had no idea who was at bat because I didn't recognize the names of the pitcher or batter. But the big advantage was no commercials. In-between innings, they just left the mike open and we could just listen to the goings-on. Nice, really brings you to the park.
This meant we got to listen to the Seventh-Inning Stretch. Now all through training, Giants broadcasters have been commenting that Giants fans are "winning" the 7th inning stretch. We knew that there are a ton of Giants fans down in Scottsdale due to the championship, but I wasn't clear on what winning the stretch meant. Until today.
Take Me Out To The Ballgame starts, everyone sings along nicely, and we get to this line:
"'cause it's root, root-root for the" at which point fans insert their team name (or a two syllable nickname, Arizona fans sing "D-backs"). What we got from the White Sox spring training home sounded like this:
"'cause it's root, root-root for the GIANTS!!!"
If anyone sang "White Sox" they were completely drowned out. We won the stretch. We won the game too.
You think we're ready to get the defense of our title started? Do you think we're ready to repeat? Is Giants Nation ready?
OH HELL YES!
GO GIANTS!!!
