As most of you probably realize, next month marks the beginning of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. Southern lunatics in deep denial are planning any number of commemorations that completely dismiss the idea that slavery was part of the succession of the failed Confederate States.

Why do I need to win the lottery? Because I want to bankroll a road trip in 2014 starting in Chattanooga, Tennessee. From there, we'll take a leisurely trip down to Atlanta, have a BBQ, then march to Savannah. In Union uniforms, carrying Union flags, and singing Union marching songs. Pillaging would be frowned on, though there are some great antique places on the Atlantic coast.

You want to celebrate slavery and treason? I'll celebrate cutting through your heartland like a hot knife through grits and burning your cities to the ground.

Deal?

I know the songs

Works for me. My great-great-grandfather who served with the Union would be proud.

Hmm...maybe you should hold off on burning Atlanta (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/30/us/30confedside.html)

Hubby insists on referring to it as The War of Northern Aggression. I was born on the Union side of the line (IL), although I've been in TX 25 years or so. I remember thinking, even as a young child, that maybe if Lincoln had just let the Southern states secede peacefully, a lot of bloodshed might have been avoided. That's hubby's POV as well.

On that note, there's an indie film out there called "C.S.A", which is a mockumentary that explores what might have happened in just that circumstance. It's tongue-in-cheek, but very well done.

The appropriate response to that is "The Slaver's Revolt".

White blood, anyway. Apparently blood shed during floggings doesn't count...

Lisa says she likes the idea. I have family who fought on both sides (not surprising with so much of my ancestry coming out of northern Arkansas) and I'm with you.

commemorations that completely dismiss the idea that slavery was part of the succession[..]You want to celebrate slavery

I think you must pick one here.

Speaking as a member of what is left of the first family of the Confederacy, I plead guilty on slavery and starting the shooting war, not guilty on the treason.

Mind you, the next anniversary will be in June 2012... with Canadians marching south and burning the White House again ;-)

That's awesome!

As the descendant of Kentuckians who thought "This seccesion business is BS, as is owning people", I heartily approve.

We disagree on a lot, but you know, if I win the lottery, I'll give you the ticket for this.

I'm just about finished reading U.S. Grant's memoirs. Doug, if you haven't read this yet, you should.

And to the person whose husband refers to the Civil War as the "War of Northern Aggression", I suggest taking a look at the actual articles of secession passed by the various Confederate states. They were hot for blood, started the shooting, and all because what they wanted was to own other human beings. These are the facts, in their own words.

The idea is amusing, but win the lottery or not, I wouldn't try it. The people whose noses you're trying to tweak include loons with guns among their number, and even today I would NOT be sanguine about marching through those areas, especially the ones destroyed by the Union army during that particular march.

Ah, you forget.. I'm a loon with a gun. Back when I was at Fort Benning, Ga. as part of the Army of Occupation we used to joke about the constant "The South will Rise Again" rhetoric we heard. Yes, tey can rise again. So do pop-up targets on the range.
