One of my favorite Bill Maudlin cartoons. A machinegun team with smoke rising from the barrel of their .30 cal. "Yeah, I coulda sworn a couple of Krauts was hiding there. Call th' cooks."
We had to wait for the Cattleman's Association rep to come out and ID the carcass (at the time, Ft. Hood leased out the maneuver area, including the ranges & beaten zones, to a coop of cattleman) and by the time they arrived on-scene, something like 20 hours had passed - so no steaks for us.
The family of deer I lit up with my Bradley's coax a few months before (they were right in line with the troop target I was expecting, and hey, they were just bright spots on the thermals) were too badly chopped up to salvage I was told by a friend on the range detail.
