Association Meme: Comment to this post and I will give you 5 subjects/things I associate you with. Then post this in your LJ and elaborate on the subjects given.

1. Traveller

Ah, you never forget your first love. I had played a little D&D, but Traveller really caught me. Where other games had you starting out as an unexperienced youth; Traveller was the first to have a real character creation system, you entered the game with years of experience and the skills to show for it. Over time, I got caught up in the setting, the Third Imperium and eventually got involved with writing for, and expanding the game. I know the Imperium as well as I know my own country. But, it was still better when your character could die during generation.

2. Penguins

Best animals on Earth. I did a report on them back in the 7th grade and fell in love with the odd little things. Since then, I've enthused over them at zoos, read what I can on them, and with the coming of the web, been able to follow penguins around the world. Great little birds. And they secretly run the world from their hidden bunker on Mt. Erebus.

3. Heavy metal

It seems that the music of your teenage years is the music that will stick with you for life. For me, growing up in the late 70s and early 80s, it was Metal. Especially when i hit high school and was exposed to albums like Judas Priest's British Steel or Iron Maiden's Killers. I was also a big fan of The Who, but all along, it was metal that spoke to me. Along with the screaming guitars and pounding bass lines, there's some very good song writing in there.

4. The Grateful Dead

Have I ever told you the story of my first Dead show? I was home on leave, and my friend Bill suggested we go to Boreal Ridge to see the Dead. It wasn't until we got there that he tells me we don't have tickets. I freak, but soon enough he Miracles a pair, and we go in just as the band hits the stage.

After the first set, I resolve to buy some albums.

After the second set, I'm ready to desert and follow these guys for the rest of my life.

It wasn't just the music, it was the feeling. Probably the closest I'll ever come to understanding religious ecstasy. I felt safe at Dead shows, free to dance, and accepted. If it wasn't for the Dead, I probably never would have married [livejournal.com profile] kshandra.

5. Trucks

I'm a driver. It's what I do, and I love it. Part of that love is loving my tools, in this case, an International 4300 DT flatbed. Driving a truck is awesome. You can see over other cars (and down into them, yeah, we do that) and being a professional means I take pride in my vehicle and its operation. I know every inch of my truck, and every sound it makes. I can feel when my load is off, or when a belt is started to come loose. It's one of the reasons drivers resist using other driver's vehicles... we don't know them! for a long I was planning on driving big rigs, but realistically that's not going to happen at this point.
