This year will mark my third Christmas at Lord & Sons.

The first year we had a nice little party at a small hall. Spouses were welcome, good food, an open bar, and dancing. [livejournal.com profile] kshandra and I had a blast.

Last year, the party was held in the warehouse on a workday. This led to the drivers showing up during the party (two missed the whole thing) and having to unload and park while everyone else had a good time.

So, what is the plan this year? The party is December 19th, from 1200 to 1430. To make sure that everyone is there, we're closing at noon that day; and coming in an hour and a half early! The drivers will show up at 0400. Our immediate reaction, almost in unison, was "who the hell do you think we're going to be delivering to at that hour?"

Look at it this way: Normally, drivers come in at 0530. We leave usually within 60-90 minutes. In most cases, drivers reach their first stops in 15-30 minutes. So stops start being made between 0645 - 0730. Assuming a normal load (a week before Christmas? Ha.) well be arriving at our first stops between 0515 - 0600. Where we will find locked gates, empty sites, and phones rolling over to voice mail. The only way to make this work is do the routes backwards, drive out to the most distant stop and work back to the warehouse.

I'm not even planning on staying for the party! I'd already promised Kirsten that I'd make every effort to attend her corporate event, which is the same day, and I know I'd be peopled out a lot faster if I had to deal with a mass of coworkers first. That, and I'd like to get home and shower before trying to be sociable.

Amazing. I'm already hearing several people saying they're just going to skip the party and go home.

Damn. I'm trying to decide if that is worse than no party, or an actual insult. You'd think the drop in fuel cost alone would make it good party year.

Thing is none of us were expecting anything this year! Just getting bonuses was a shock. Now we're having a catered buffet?
