Mich. woman: Supporting Obama? No treats for you

A suburban Detroit woman has decided to scare up the vote among neighborhood children by just offering treats to John McCain supporters.

Shirley Nagel of Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich., handed out candy Friday only to those who shared her support for the Republican presidential candidate and his running mate Sarah Palin. Others were turned away empty-handed.

TV station WJBK says a sign outside Nagel's house warned: "No handouts for Obama supporters, liars, tricksters or kids of supporters."

Nagel calls Democrat Barack Obama "scary." When asked about children who were turned away empty-handed and crying, she said: "Oh well. Everybody has a choice."

Fax and phone messages left at numbers for Nagel were not returned.

What a fucking bitch! I really hope the publicity this is starting to get snowballs on her and really ruins her life. Taking out political revenge on kids out for candy? I think the local Obama supporters should have a victory party on her lawn Tuesday night.

If by "victory party" you mean "have their dogs crap all over her lawn" I'm in total agreement.

Soap her windows with Obama slogans? Hey, it's trick OR treat, and the "pro-Obama" kids* didn't get any treats...

* Who the heck is old enough to have coherent political views and still trick or treat?

Obviously people like this are grinches and should reap what they sow -- I'm sure that there will be some harsh words for them today and tomorrow and the next day and so on. (If she even managed to survive Halloween without her entire house being TP'd. Or, more likely and more appropriately, the older siblings of some of the crying kids rotten-egging of Nagel's home.) But I lay the blame for this sort of thing being so *widespread* firmly in McCain's campaign.

There have always been people who are doofuses and try to incite fear in others. But McCain and his people have been actively divisive of US society for the past several months. It doesn't matter that the tendencies are there; they've been given the wink and the nod to look at supporters of 'that one' as subhuman, and to encourage violence against them. Sure, there's been lawn-sign vandalism on both sides, I won't deny some Obama supporters have defaced lawn-signs... but I've yet to hear of an Obama supporter shooting at lawn sign vandals with intent to kill.

Honestly, this election is about "us vs. them" from both sides. It's a weird time.

Tell me that one again when you can prove Obama rallies feature people yelling racial insults at McCain and not being called on it. Until then, any claims that the Democrats are running as dirty as the Republicans are utter bullshit.

I didn't specify racism, though I'm sure it exists. It's a very simple way--in this case--to identify a difference.

From the Democratic side, you've got a more "philosophical" level of argument about conservatism and religion, and about money choices. Instead of race, you get jabs on other sets of identifying and strongly held beliefs.

Both sides run as dirty as they feel will work with a tolerable cost.

*shrug*

It's not the tactics, it's the patterns in the system that makes it "us vs. them".

Our kids didn't have to sign any "Loyalty oaths" to get candy. Even most McCain supporters are not that vindictive.

And from what I've gathered, via that entry and that video... the local Faux News affiliate was quite careful about getting her name and location right....

I admit I'm torn. On the one hand, retribution and vengeance is not justice and the liberals are supposed to be the 'forgiving' type.

On the gripping hand... karmic retribution has apparently been undertaken by /b/. May her god help her.

You've never heard of how the French Revolution went? Or the Great Railway Strike of 1877? We can be stone bastards if you get our dander up.

You make a darn good point there. =) I guess I meant 'liberals in modern American politics.' The liberal democrats in particular seem to have been the whipping boys of the legislature.

But yeah. The 'leftist' French Revolution was NOT a very 'forgiving' action!

Looking back at British history, liberals in control didn't make for happy times in the colonies either.

Michigan is part of Palin’s "Real America", isn’t it?

Nice vision of America, that.
