Would you do meth if it was legalized? Been there, did that, NO
Are you for or against abortion? I'm for choice, which is an important distinction. I actually wish that abortion was so rare as to be almost unheard of outside medical emergencies that threatened the life of the woman. However, I want to reach this point through education not only in contraception, but how to say *no.*
Would our country (United States) fall with a woman president? What a silly question! Of course not; the fate of the nation rests on far more than the quality of the President, no matter what gender happens to hold the office. That being said, a bad President can do damage, but the US is a large nation with a lot of institutional inertia. It would take a lot to make it collapse.
Do you believe in the death penalty? No. No matter how careful we are, the justice system makes mistakes. If we jail someone, even for life, we can correct that error and free him (often with a hefty settlement) if it is later proved that he is innocent. The Innocence Project has some great information about this. Of course I'd prefer to see some radical prison reform to make doing time an arduous and stressful time. I survived 16 hour days crammed with work in Basic, why shouldn't we expect the same from felons? Up at 0500, Lights out at 2200. Privileges must be earned, and are lost as a group. Mandatory schooling and vocational training, and I'd love to see prisons raise their own food. Basically, I want Joe Crackdealer to get out of the California Correctional System with a determination that digging ditches for the minimum wage is a better life than ever going back to priosn.
Do you wish marijuana would be legalized already? Sure, and treat it like we treat alcohol and cigarettes. Control access and tax the hell out of it. Of course, I'd prefer that we drop these ridiculous laws so we could start growing hemp in the US. Hemp is an amazing plant with multiple uses and could easily replace tobacco as a major cash crop for the South.
Do you believe in God? No. I see no evidence for any deities or spirits.
Do you think same sex marriage should be legalized? Well, it is legal in California, and I'm working to keep it that way. The 14th Amendment to the Constitution makes it clear that you cannot restrict rights without due process of law. Since the Supreme Court has, on multiple occasions, stated that marriage is a fundamental right, we have to grant that right to any competent adult capable of giving informed consent.
Do you think its wrong that so many Hispanics are moving to the USA? No, pienso que es maravilloso. ¡Significa restaurantes mejor en mi vecindad!
A twelve year old girl has a baby...should she keep it? Depends on the situation. Is she going to have support from family and the father? Is the girl capable of dealing with the child? What were the circumstances under which she got pregnant? There really isn't a one size fits all solution to this question.
Should the alcohol age be lowered to 18? I'm of two minds. On one hand, I fail to see why at 18 I could vote, serve my nation in the Army, be tried as an adult, marry, sign contacts, etc, but not buy a beer. (Of course, back in the day an exception was written into the laws of many states exempting active duty members of the Armed Forces.. that went away in early 1986.) On the other hand, alcohol is a contributing factor in a huge number of deaths among young people, so why increase the number of people who can legally access liquor? On the gripping hand, lowering the legal age might reduce the mystique of booze, cutting down on the appeal slightly.
Assisted suicide is illegal...do you agree? No. I'm in favor of patients with terminal illnesses having access to physician assisted end of life care. The Oregon Death With Dignity Act is the model for such laws, and in use has been used fairly lightly. I faced these questions when my HD was active, and my survival was a coin toss. Given the knowledge that the end was coming, I think I would opt for an end of my own choosing.
Do you believe in spanking your children? Now we get to listen to the non-parent hold forth! I think spanking is best used as a last line for extremely serious violations of the rules. Teaching kids the rules when they are young means that even limited punishments like timeouts and losses of privileges can drive the lesson home. Too much spanking changes it from a lesson to just another thing to be endured.
Would you burn an American flag for a million dollars? Sure. It's a flag, a symbol. I love America, and swore and oath to defend it with my life if necessary. However, the flag is not my nation. So hand over the cash, I'll provide the lighter fluid.
A mother is declared innocent after murdering her 5 children in a temporary insanity case, do you agree? I'd have to know more about the case. Oh, and the usual wording is "Not guilty by reason of insanity or mental defect." If she did it, she's not innocent, the question is was she capable of guilt. In an insanity plea, the claim is that the person charged was so far out of a normal mental state that s/he was incapable or understanding that the act was wrong at the moment of the act. It's difficult to prove, and like I said, I'd need to see a lot more about the case.
Are you afraid others will judge you from reading some of your answers? If I was afraid of that i wouldn't post this. I know that I'm politically far from some of my friends (far to the right of some, far to the left of others) but I'm willing to share what I believe.
