John Bowker just hit his first career grand slam. (For you non-baseball people, that's a homerun with runners on all bases. Four runs score with one swing of the bat.)

Giants up 6-0 in the eighth.

Yeah, he's my new hero. I need his jersey.

Cool! Bowker could be the future, assuming we don't end up trading him away or something like that.

All the kids we've brought up this year look pretty good.

So there was something remarkable about how he hit the ball with the bat? It went extra far or something?

He hit it about 375 feet (114m) and over a 10-foot (3m) wall. Hitting a baseball has been described as one of the hardest things to do in sports. The ball travels 60 feet, 6 inches (18.4m) from the pitcher to the batter at speeds of up to 100mph (160kph). The ball is also moving due to the spin given it by the pitcher, so a batter has a fraction of a second to recognize the pitch, decide to swing, and make his move.

What made this one special is that the bases were loaded (the Giants had a baserunner at each base) and John Bowker is one of our young players in his first season. [livejournal.com profile] kshandra and I were there for his very first game, and saw him get his first hit and first home run. So watching him get these firsts is fun for me.

Also, since the Giants aren't that great this year, any bright spot makes me do the happy dance.
