There's a thread on alt.atheism right now about the historical existence of Nazareth (short form, it wasn't there in the time of Jesus.) At best it was a cluster of farms. This has led to our usual silliness.

>>> There is evidence Nazareth existed, but it wasn't a "city" until about
>>> the third century CE. There were apparently a few farms in the area
>>> in the first century, but definitely not a place with which one could
>>> attach the label "of Nazareth" to his name.
>>>
>> So "Jesus of Nazareth" would be equivalent to "Jesus of Weed, Califonia"?
>
>Or even "Jesus of Gerlach, NV." I guess we'd have to ask the Mormons on
>that one...

I couldn't resist.

Our Man, Who art on fire
Hollow be Thy Frame
Thy Burn Night come
Our clothes be shorn, in dust and in sun
Give us this day our daily ice
And forgive us for the raver camps
As we forgive the art car which trespassed upon our tent
And lead us not into Gerlach
But deliver us more beer
Amen.

Heh. Yes, even in Scripture you can get a taste of this, if you read between the lines.

There's one passage where one guy is telling another about this great new rabbi they've heard of, this fellow from Nazareth. "From Nazareth?" is the response, with a definite "you're kidding, right?" connotation from it.

I've always heard it explained as confusion over Jesus being a Nazerene, a member of a particular social grouping. The writers (or later translators) got term incorrect. It's be like someone taking "Doug, the Trucker" and changing it to "Doug, who was from Truck."

Possible. There was a specific sect within Judaism called the Nazirites. They were basically sworn to maintain ritual purity, which included never cutting their hair. Samson and the prophet Samuel were Nazirites.

The odd thing, if I remember correctly, is that the author of the Gospel of Matthew cites some piece of prior literature claiming that the Messiah would be a Nazarene (or Nazirite) . . . but we don't have the passage he cited. The question might be easier to settle if we did know what text he was referring to.

In the meantime, it's not as if that author didn't misquote earlier Scripture in other places. That whole "a virgin shall conceive" bit doesn't work if you're familiar with the original Hebrew texts, so it seems likely that the author only knew the Greek translations. All the Hebrew said was that "a young woman shall conceive," which is hardly an earthshattering announcement.

My bet is that Jesus did come from Nazareth, which at the time really was the back end of nowhere. Seems to fit the other texts, and it even makes theological sense if you consider that the whole point was to be exactly the opposite of what most Jews were expecting from the Messiah.
