Today was our first Giants game of the season. The day was almost perfect.

San Francisco Giants: 7
St. Louis Cardinals: 8
(10 innings)

Read the SF Gate story

We caught the train up, got to the park in plenty of time to wander around and buy stuff. Kirsten got a new Giants shirt (her Grateful Dead/Giants one is getting a bit long in the tooth) and a sun visor, I got an orange shirt for the July 4th game. We're going to get "BLEACHERS" and our section number "142" on the back of that shirt. Seems to be a trend among the Bench-Sitting Horde. I brought along Mr. Bigglesworth, since the park has wireless and a dedicated server that lets you keep score, call up stats, and watch replays. Worked like a charm, except the bright sunlight made it impossible to read the screen!

What shocked us was that it was hot! We're so used to attending Giants games and needing cold-weather gear to survive, we never even thought that a forecast for warm weather would affect AT&T Park. But the temperature at game time was in the low eighties. Needless to say, sitting on metal benches in the hot sun wearing black t-shirts soon got a mite uncomfortable. But we were there for baseball, and we got a great game. Matt Cain (who must be on suicide watch right now) carried a no hitter into the 7th, and helped his own cause by getting a solo home run. John Bowker, called up this morning from the minors to make his MLB debut, responds by going 2-3, including a three-run homer! Kid got shoved back onto the field for a standing ovation from a Giants nation that is aching for young talent.

Alas, our damn bullpen blew things, and even after we tied the game in the 9th, Kiri and I were toasted and done. So we shuffled out back towards CalTrain, learning along the way that the Cards had scored the eventual winning run in the 10th. Too bad.

But a great day all around, and Kiri built a Lou Seal at the ball park's Build-A-Bear.

I've posted some pictures from the day.

Next up, April 28th against the Colorado Rockies.

Insert joke here about C being the Roman numeral for 100.

Then again, we have 10,000 losses, so...

Arrgh! We got to my mother's house in the 7th just after they broke the no-hitter, but I thought we were in good shape. After we left, I switched on the radio only to hear the bad news. Sorry about that.

Can you use any of these tickets (http://kevin-standlee.livejournal.com/501957.html) that it turns out I can't use? I know the Thursday afternoon game is a bust, but I thought possibly one of the two night games might be workable.

We're already going to the Tigers game, and we're pretty heavily committed the rest of the time. Thanks for the offer though.

And, given the performances by Ryan Ludwick, Chris Duncan, Albert Pujols and Rick Ankiel (all under 30 years of age), the Giants were left aching by young talent.

That being said, it looks like y'all have first crack at a pitcher (Joel Pineiro) just coming off the DL, so we'll see what happens....

BTW, your response to my text message yesterday cut off in the middle of "Hennessey." Is it worth repeating? ;-)

I was just wondering whether Hennessey had enjoyed some Hennessy before taking the mound.

(As you may have noticed, I don't text well.)
