Two new shows with promise.

Fox debuted two new shows last night, both of them quite interesting.
Firefly follows the adventures of the crew of thefree trader transport ship Serenity. The crew is a mixed lot - a married couple, professional companion, ex-Army Guy with no shipboard skills.. the usual Traveller mix. The first episode was a bit choppy, but hell, the first episode of Babylon 5 didn't impress me too much either.
One thing I really liked was the attention paid to hard science. The ships use reaction drives, which cut off when thrust is not needed any longer. There appears to be some kind of antigrav in use, but its use is somewhat limited. Weapons use bullets, maglev trains provide transportation on colony worlds.. I really like the feel of the show.
All in all, the show felt like Blake's 7 meets Bonanza. With luck, the writing will continue to improve, and they will follow up on the pushes established in the premier: pissing off a mob boss, the mysterious men coming after the medic's sister, etc.
After Firefly, Fox showed the first episode of John Doe. Now this could be the sleeper hit of the year. John Doe awakens on an island off the Seattle coast with no memories.. but he knows everything else. When rescued by Khmer fishermen, he speaks the language. In one impressive scene he answers questions. Including recititing the binary code for DOS.
An interesting fact: John can only see in black and white. But certain people and things he sees in color. He doesn't know why. The entire series is intriguing. Hopefully, they will run it with a definite ending in mind

Re: John Doe reminded me...
