I've owned and enjoyed my iShuffle pretty much since the time I started with Lord&Sons. Conveniently enough, the 512MB memory (just as an aside, I can recall oohing and aahing over a friend's new desktop computer with a whole 30MB hard drive!) gave me about 7.5 hours of music. Given the amount of time I spend in the truck listening to the news, this was just right. Except for one thing. With the shuffle, you got the music in either an order set by how you have iTunes set or at random (hence the name.) Some days, I don't want to hear Iron Maiden, or really want to listen to Billy the Mountain.

Seriously, there are few joys in life greater than driving along in a big-ass truck while singing "a mountain is something you don't want to fuck with" at the top of your lungs.

But now my problems are solved! Kirsten picked up a beautiful red 8GB iPod Nano from [livejournal.com profile] captivatinglove (Thanks!) at today's Baycon staff meeting.

I just loaded the thing. 6.05 GB later (plus 52.7 MB of other information like album cover art) and I've got 4.1 days of music here. 1,274 songs.

So, in summation: my music device is cooler, my phone is way cooler, I have a Bluetooth earpiece, and Mr. Bigglesworth is not as powerful as her laptop, but it is like the MiniCooper of Laptops.. people love them even if they can't do as much. So still cooler.

She's getting a new phone in a week or so. I'm a bit frightened of what she's going to come back with to even the score.

In other News of Science! A story on the SFGate led me to begin reading about SmartCars. Since all I want a car for is going to and from work, and occasional runs to the store and the like, this might be the thing for me. It's either this or a truck bought at a public auction with 98,000 miles and 23 Carfax reports on it.

Bwaha, Frank Zappa for the freaking win! I have fond, albeit mildly embarrassing, memories of driving through downtown Eugene, Oregon, listening to "Catholic Girls" at a very loud volume, and dad somehow driving past every Catholic church in town, it seemed...

I've had a Smart for a few years. Good car. Shame you can't get the diesel model up there, as it's got even better mileage than the new '08s.

I've had six foot + friends in it on several occasions, and they find it comfortable enough. I once did a five hour trip with one in it, and another was contemplating buying one.

I've got a 160G iPod classic which Robin gave me for my birthday last October. I've been ripping my entire Wall o' CD's to the thing. I'm most of the way done (Down to soundtracks & compilation albums) & I've only used up about 61G.

I'm looking forward to plugging the thing into the car stereo for the drive to Denver this Summer.

I had it playing today while I was cleaning up & the moment I turned on the vacuum it lit up with Hendrix's "Voodoo Chile" then went to Big Brother & Blue Öyster Cult before wrapping up with Earl Scruggs/Dave Grisman/Jimmy Martin doing some high-powered breakdown. When I was done vacuuming it went straight to Classical, I think that it may have a bit more AI then is documented.

I test-drove a smart fortwo a few months back, and found the ride very rough -- and this coming from someone who'd been driving a pickup for 8.5 years. I didn't actually cancel my reservation til the truck got totaled, though -- at that point I needed something quickly, and my name wouldn't have come up on the waitlist for a while yet.

They have a fair bit to like, but they're very much a try before you buy car.
